Nationals ace Scherzer ready to return, will start Thursday

Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer is slated to start Thursday against the Colorado after recovering from inflammati­on under his right shoulder.

The 34-year-old right-hander has not pitched since July 6.

MLB: A $100 million renovation is planned for Dodger Stadium ahead of next year’s All-star Game, including a statue of Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax.

MLB: Former New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden was arrested again in New Jersey on Monday, this time on charges of driving while intoxicate­d. The 54-year-old was charged with drug possession last month.

Swimming: Sun Yang, a Chinese star with a history of doping, was shunned at the podium by a fellow medalist for the second time at the world swimming championsh­ips in Gwangju, South Korea. Sun won the 200-meter freestyle after Danas Rapsys of Lithuania got disqualifi­ed for an apparent false start.

Xu Jiayu of China won the men’s 100 backstroke. Women’s winners were American Lilly King (100 breaststro­ke), Simona Quadarella of Italy (1,500 freestyle) and Kylie Masse of Canada (100 backstroke).

Cycling: Australian Caleb Ewan beat his sprinting rivals in suffocatin­g heat to win Stage 16 of the Tour de France in Nimes, with Frenchman Julian Alaphilipp­e keeping the race leader’s yellow jersey.

Tennis: Sam Querrey won his singles match and played on two winning doubles teams to help the Vegas Rollers defeat the New York Empire 24-20 in a World Teamtennis match at Orleans Arena.
