Indians’ Salazar returns to IL after first game in two years

-

Cleveland right-hander Danny Salazar returned to the injured list with a right groin strain, one day after pitching in his first major league game in two years.

Salazar, 29, troubled by right arm injuries the past two seasons, pitched Thursday for the first time since the 2017 American League Division

Series. He allowed two runs in four innings against Houston.

An All-star in 2016, Salazar didn’t pitch last season and had shoulder surgery in July 2018.

In other Indians news, manager Terry Francona returned a day after missing a game because of surgery to repair a tear in his retina.

Angels: Catcher Jonathan Lucroy was designated for assignment, one day after returning from an 18-game absence prompted by a concussion and broken nose. The 33-yearold two-time All-star batted .242 with seven home runs and 30 RBIS in 74 games after signing with Los Angeles in December.

Dodgers: Left-hander Hyun-jin Ryu (sore neck), the majors’ ERA leader among starting pitchers this season at 1.53, was placed on the 10-day injured list. The 32-year-old pitched six shutout innings Wednesday at Colorado but exited after throwing only 80 pitches.

Cubs: Left-hander Cole Hamels (left oblique strain) is expected to be activated to start Saturday. The 35-year-old four-time All-star has been sidelined since June 29.

Pirates: Third baseman Jung Ho Kang, 32, was designated for assignment after batting .169 with 10 home runs and 24 RBIS in 65 games this season.
