Virus pandemic prompts Stanford to cut 11 sports
Stanford is dropping 11 of 36 varsity sports after 2020-21 and eliminating 20 support staff jobs amid financial difficulties caused by the COVID-19 crisis. Sports to be cut are men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men’s rowing, co-ed and women’s sailing, squash, synchronized swimming, men’s volleyball and wrestling. Scholarships and coaches’ contracts will be honored.
Toledo: Junior football defensive tackle Jahneil Douglas, 22, was shot and killed outside Gino’s Pizza in Toledo around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday after police said a fight broke out between two men, WTOL-TV reported. Michael Mitchell,
24, was arrested Wednesday on murder charges.
Michigan: Football coach Jim Harbaugh said he was nearing a contract extension before coping with COVID-19 became a top priority for all involved in the discussions. The 56-yearold, who is 47-18 in five seasons, has two years left on a deal that pays him about $7 million annually.
North Carolina: Voluntary campus football workouts were paused for at least a week after 37 positives were reported in 429 COVID-19 tests among athletes, coaches and staff.
Ohio State: Voluntary campus workouts by athletes in seven sports were paused after release of the most recent undisclosed results of COVID-19 testing.
Northwestern: The football game against Wisconsin slated for Nov. 7 at Chicago’s Wrigley Field was moved to Ryan Field because of COVID-19 concerns.
