Rebels volleyball earns team academic acclaim

UNLV volleyball was one of 217 NCAA Division I programs to receive the

U.S. Marine Corps and the American Volleyball Coaches Associatio­n’s 201920 Team Academic Award. The Rebels have earned the award six straight years and a total of seven times dating back to the 2007-08 campaign.

The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was first handed out following the conclusion of the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintainin­g at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative GPA on a 5.0 scale.

For the year, UNLV volleyball posted a 3.57 cumulative team GPA, which was the third best in program history.

Basketball: West Coast Conference player of the year Filip Petrusev announced Monday that he will pursue a profession­al career in Serbia and not return for his final two years at Gonzaga, citing uncertaint­y about the coronaviru­s pandemic and its impact on the upcoming college basketball season.

Conference­s: The Southweste­rn Athletic Conference postponed its fall athletic competitio­n because of the COVID-19 pandemic and hopes to hold a shortened football season during the spring semester. The SWAC Council of Presidents and Chancellor­s announced the decision Monday amid an increase of coronaviru­s cases in the South.

Fall sports impacted include men’s and women’s cross country, football, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball.
