RB Williams lone UNLV player on preseason all-league team

Senior Charles Williams is UNLV’S lone player on the preseason All-mountain West football team. The 5-foot-9-inch, 190-pound running back was an all-league selection in 2019 and claimed one of two running back spots on the preseason team, joining Wyoming junior Xazavian Valladay. Williams ran for a league-high 1,257 yards and scored 11 touchdowns in 2019.

Defending champion Boise State led the league with eight preseason selections, including sophomore quarterbac­k Hank Bachmeier. San Diego State and Colorado

State followed with four picks apiece. The Rebels were predicted to finish last in the

West division in the league’s preseason poll.

Pittsburgh: Athletic director Heather

Lyke asked Senate Judiciary Committee members to prohibit college sports betting. Lyke, who appeared remotely, testified Atlantic Coast Conference presidents unanimousl­y oppose gambling over concerns for the wellbeing of the student body and athletes and potential threats to competitio­ns’ integrity.

West Virginia: Defensive coordinato­r

Vic Koenning agreed to part ways with the football team a month after sophomore safety Kerry Martin alleged the 60-year-old made a series of insensitiv­e remarks, including against Hispanics. Koenning, who had two seasons left on his contract, will be paid $590,000.

Connecticu­t: Former basketball forward Stanley Robinson died Tuesday of undisclose­d causes at a Birmingham, Alabama, family residence. He was 32. Robinson averaged 9.8 points and 6.2 rebounds in 103 Huskies starts from 2006 to 2010.

New Mexico: Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham wrote to New Mexico and New Mexico State regents, board members and administra­tors urging them to postpone fall sports.

Toledo: Jason Candle became the first Football Bowl Subdivisio­n coach to publicly announce a positive COVID-19 test. The 40-year-old said he is asymptomat­ic.

NCAA: The football oversight committee asked the associatio­n’s Board of Governors to avoid making a decision Friday on whether to conduct fall championsh­ips this year.
