Vikings trainer/infection control officer has virus

-

Minnesota vice president of sports medicine Eric Sugarman, who’s in charge of the organization’s virus prevention strategy, has tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced.

About four hours later on Monday, the Vikings placed four rookies — including first-round draft pick wide receiver Justin Jefferson — on the league’s newly created reserve list for COVID-19. Those players, the Vikings said, were not infected by Sugarman.

Sugarman said he and his family members immediately quarantined themselves and began following the NFL’S related protocols after receiving the news of the positive tests over the weekend. Sugarman, who has two teenage sons with his wife, Heather, was appointed infection control officer for the Vikings earlier this year after the virus outbreak necessitated such a role.

Joining Jefferson on the reserve list were offensive tackle Blake Brandel, safety Brian Cole II and center Tyler Higby. Brandel (sixth round) and Cole (seventh) were draft picks, and Higby was a college free agent.

49ers: Running back Raheem Mostert reworked his contract with San Francisco after previously requesting a trade. Agent Brett Tessler announced the new deal Monday that ensures the running back will report to camp with his teammates later this week.

Saints: New Orleans signed center Cesar Ruiz, linebacker Zack Baun, tight end Adam Trautman and quarterback Tommy Stevens to four-year contracts.

Bills: Buffalo released receiver Ray-ray Mccloud and offensive lineman Garrett Mcghin a day before players were set to report for the start of training camp. The moves trim the Bills’ roster to 86, with teams required to have a maximum 80 players by Aug. 16.

Commissioner Exempt List: New York Giants cornerback Deandre Baker, Seattle cornerback Quinton Dunbar and Washington wide receiver Cody Latimer were put on the NFL’S Commissioner Exempt List on Monday while facing felony charges from offseason incidents. A player on the Commissioner Exempt List cannot practice or play in games but does get paid.
