Cards’ series at Detroit is coronavirus’ latest victim

Field of Dreams game also postponed, to ’21

Seven St. Louis Cardinals players and six staff members have tested positive for COVID-19, causing Major League Baseball to postpone the team’s four-game series at Detroit.

The series was to have been played at Comerica Park from Tuesday through Thursday.

“You think about how quickly something like this can spread,” Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. “Until it touches you, you sometimes might not believe it, but needless to say we know this is very real and we know it moves quickly and it moves silently, but it can infect a lot of people fast.”

Mozeliak said that five of those who tested positive did not show symptoms. He said the others did — headaches, cough, sniffles, low-grade fever.

Field of Dreams game:

Major League Baseball’s Field of Dreams game in Iowa has been postponed until 2021 because of the novel coronavirus. The game at a newly constructed ballpark on the cornfield adjacent to the site of the 1989 movie had been scheduled for Aug. 13 in Dyersville.

The Chicago White Sox originally had been set to host the New York Yankees. When MLB remade its schedule following the delayed start to the season, the St. Louis Cardinals became the opponent.

MLB will keep the White Sox as one of the teams for the game next year. The other team has not been determined.

Miami CEO Derek Jeter blames the team’s COVID-19 outbreak on a collective false sense of security that made the Marlins lax about social distancing and wearing masks.

“The entire traveling party got a little too comfortable,” Jeter said Monday.

Infected were 21 members of the traveling party, including at least 18 players. None is seriously ill, Jeter said, and he expects all to return this season.

Ace Mike Soroka is out for the season after tearing his right Achilles tendon Monday night against the New York Mets.

Soroka was hurt in the third inning after delivering a pitch to J.D. Davis, who grounded the ball toward first baseman Freddie Freeman. Soroka broke toward first to cover the bag, only to go down on his first step off the mound. The righthander knew right away it was a devastating injury, one that ensures he won’t be back on the mound until 2021.

Chicago’s Kris Bryant was back in the starting lineup against Kansas City on Monday night after missing two games with a stomach ailment. Bryant, 28, a Bonanza High School product, batted leadoff and played left field. His illness was not related to the new coronavirus.

Right-hander Shohei Ohtani has a right forearm strain that will prevent Los Angeles’ two-way star from throwing for at least four to six weeks, possibly ending his season as a pitcher after just two starts.

General manager Billy Eppler announced that Ohtani “has a grade 1-2 strain of the flexor pronator mass” — a collection of muscles and tendons in the forearm near the elbow. Ohtani, 26, reported discomfort in his arm Sunday after he issued five walks and got only five outs in a rough 50-pitch start against Houston. He is day-to-day as the Angels’ designated hitter.

Also, top prospect Jo Adell is joining the Angels, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press. The 21-yearold outfielder could make his major league debut in Seattle on Tuesday night when the struggling Angels open a six-game road trip.

Cleveland manager Terry Francona missed the club’s Monday night game at Cincinnati and will miss Tuesday night’s game because of a gastrointestinal issue that has bothered him for months.

Francona was to be checked Monday by doctors at the Cleveland Clinic. Indians President Chris Antonetti said the team will “take it one step at a time” and that it’s too early to know when the 61-year-old manager will return.

Milwaukee bench coach Pat Murphy was released from the hospital Monday after suffering a heart attack during a team workout Saturday, manager Craig Counsell said. Brewers general manager David Stearns said Sunday that Murphy,

61, received a stent at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee.
