UNLV baseball team repeat winner of academic award

The Rebels are one of only 67 NCAA Division I programs to earn the 2019-20 American Baseball Coaches Associatio­n’s Team Academic Excellence Award.

The Rebels claimed the award for the second straight year. They were one of two Mountain West squads – Boise State being the other – to earn the scholastic accolade.

UNR: Dick Trachok, whose athletic career with the Wolf Pack spanned parts of nine decades as a star running back, coach and athletic director, has died. He was 94.

Trachock died Sunday at his daughter’s Reno home, his son, Rick Trachock, said.

The U.S. Army Air Corps veteran starred on teams that went 25-6 from 1946-48 and played in the school’s first two bowl games — the 1948 Salad Bowl and 1949 Harbor Bowl.

Trachok was coach from 1959-68 and athletic director from 1969-86. Since then, he had served as athletic director emeritus and kept an office on campus, attending sporting events through last year.

Texas Christian: Football coach Gary Patterson apologized Monday for repeating a racial slur when telling a player to stop using the slur in team meetings.

Linebacker Dylan Jordan accused Patterson on Twitter of using the slur during a confrontat­ion at practice. Center Kellton Hollins said on Twitter the team’s leadership council discussed the issue with Patterson and told him use of the word wasn’t acceptable in any context.

School Chancellor Victor Boschini wrote in an email to TCU’S student media that Patterson didn’t use the slur against any player or group on the team.
