Lawmakers: Erase Landis from plaque

- The Associated Press

A group of House Democrats called Tuesday for the name of former baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis to be removed from future Most Valuable Player plaques, an idea endorsed by several players who have won the award.

U.S. Reps. Gil Cisneros of California and Cedric Richmond of Louisiana sent a letter signed by 28 members of Congress to Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred and the Baseball Writers’ Association of America asking for action.

In late June, former NL MVPS Barry Larkin, Mike Schmidt and Terry Pendleton said they would favor removing Landis’ name because of concerns over his handling of Black players.

Left fielder Juan Soto was reinstated by the Washington Nationals from the COVID-19 injured list Tuesday after missing the team’s first seven games.

Manager Dave Martinez did not put the slugger in Washington’s starting lineup against the New York Mets for the opener of a two-game series Tuesday night. Martinez did say Soto was available to pinch hit.

Indians manager Terry Francona continues to undergo medical tests for a gastrointestinal issue, and there remains no clear timetable for when he’ll return.

Catcher Yadier Molina said he’s one of the players on the team who tested positive for COVID-19.

The nine-time All-star revealed his results Tuesday in a Spanish-language Instagram post.

Shohei Ohtani won’t pitch again this season after straining his right forearm in his second start, manager Joe Maddon said. Ohtani likely will return as the team’s designated hitter this week.
