Connecticut first FBS program to cancel season for COVID-19

-

Connecticut canceled its 2020 football season, becoming the first Football Bowl Subdivision program to do so because of the COVID-19 crisis, after other schools had taken the Huskies off their schedules and the governor was reluctant to allow players to travel to states with high infection rates. Uconn had been set to play its first season as an independent after leaving the American Athletic Conference.

■ Colorado State: President Joyce Mcconnell said she will launch an investigation into how the athletic department handled COVID-19 safety protocols amid a Coloradoan report that players were told by coaches not to reveal symptoms and threatened with reduced playing time should they quarantine.

■ Boston College: Notre Dame transfer quarterback Phil Jurkovec received an immediate eligibility waiver from the NCAA and will have three seasons of eligibility with the Eagles. He played three games with the Fighting Irish before redshirting as a freshman in 2018 and saw action in six games last season.

■ Alabama: The university’s board of trustees approved new contracts for offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian and defensive coordinator Pete Golding, who will make $2.5 million and $1.225 million annually, respectively, through February 2023.

■ Big Ten: The league released its 10-game conference-only schedule beginning as early as Labor Day weekend but cautioned there is no certainty games will be played.

■ West Virginia: Sophomore safety Kerry Martin opted out of this season, saying he has sickle cell anemia and asthma and doesn’t feel safe to play during the COVID-19 crisis.

■ Michigan State: Senior defensive end Jacub Panasiuk will redshirt in 2020 because of COVID-19 concerns. A two-year starter, he had five sacks last season.
