Braves’ Albies put on IL with wrist issue; Markakis returns MLB NOTEBOOK

-

Atlanta second baseman Ozzie Albies and designated hitter Matt Adams were placed on the 10-day injured list, and right fielder Nick Markakis was reinstated from the restricted list after deciding not to opt out of the season.

Albies, batting .159 and in a 2-for-21 slump, has a right wrist contusion and likely will be out for more than 10 days, manager

Brian Snitker said. An All-star in 2018, the 23-year-old played 158 games that year and 160 last season, hitting 24 home runs each year. He led the National League in hits with 189 in 2019, when he batted .295.

Adams, 31, has a left hamstring strain. He’s hit two home runs in 10 games this year.

■ Indians: Manager Terry Francona missed a fourth straight game while dealing with a gastrointestinal issue that he’s fought for months. The 61-year-old is expected to be sidelined for a few more days but will return in the “not-toodistant” future,” president Chris Antonetti said. Francona “is in the process of feeling better,” Antonetti said.

■ Cardinals: Left-hander Kwang-hyun Kim was moved from the closer role into St. Louis’ starting rotation, manager Mike Shildt said. The 32-year-old, in his first year in the majors, had a 2.51 ERA and 180 strikeouts over 190 1/3 innings for SK Wyverns in Korea last season.

■ Pirates: Reliever Nick Burdi (right elbow) was placed on the 45-day injured list. The 27-yearold, who had been serving as closer, had Tommy John surgery in 2017 and missed most of last season after surgery to correct thoracic outlet syndrome.

■ Astros: Right-hander Josh James is being moved back to the bullpen, manager Dusty Baker said. The 27-year-old, who had 100 strikeouts over 61 1/3 relief innings in 2019, had a 10.50 ERA and issued 11 walks across two starts this season.

■ Nationals: Right-hander Max Scherzer left his start against the New York Mets after one inning because of a hamstring injury that the 36-yearold seven-time All-star deemed minor, and he expects to make his next scheduled start.

■ White Sox: Second baseman Nick Madrigal (separated left shoulder) was placed on the 10-day IL, and designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion (SC joint inflammation in left shoulder) is day to day, manager Rick Renteria said.

■ Angels: Shohei Ohtani, who won’t pitch again this season because of a flexor pronator mass in his right forearm, likely will return to Los Angeles’ lineup at designated hitter Thursday, manager Joe Maddon said.
