Clemson tops preseason coach poll for second straight season

Clemson is No. 1 in the USA Today coaches’ preseason poll for a second straight year, receiving 38 of 65 first-place votes. Ohio State is No. 2 and got 17 first-place votes, followed by Alabama, Georgia and defending national champ Louisiana State. The Southeaste­rn Conference and Big Ten each have six top25 teams. The Big 12 and Atlantic Coast Conference each have four. The lone Group of Five schools ranked are No. 21 Central Florida and No. 22 Cincinnati.

■ Brigham Young: The Cougars will play at Navy on Labor Day night in a matchup of teams that had openers against traditiona­l rivals canceled. The Midshipmen were to have played Notre Dame in Dublin, Ireland; the teams had faced each other every season since 1927. BYU will face Navy for the third time and first since 1989.

■ Kentucky: Wide receivers Rayshad and Rahsaan Lewis, sons of Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis, announced plans to join the Wildcats. Rayshad, a senior, had been at Maryland and Rahsaan, a junior, at Florida Atlantic.

■ Penn State: All-america junior linebacker Micah Parsons opted out of the season. He had a team-best 109 tackles, with 14 for loss, and five sacks — including a 14-tackle, two-sack effort in a Cotton Bowl win in which he forced two fumbles.

■ UCLA: Eight players tested positive for COVID-19 upon their return to campus in early July, ESPN reported. The university did not announce the positive tests but confirmed it has no student-athletes in quarantine.

■ Purdue: Junior wide receiver Rondale Moore opted out of the season. He was an All-american as a freshman, when he had 114 catches for 1,258 yards and 12 touchdowns, before losing much of 2019 to injury.

■ Miami: Defensive end Greg Rousseau opted out of the season. As a redshirt freshman in 2019, his 15.5 sacks ranked second nationally to Ohio State defensive end Chase Young’s 16.5.
