Stars edge Flames for 3-2 series lead

-

EDMONTON, Alberta — John Klingberg didn’t have the decisive goal taken away this time.

The defenseman scored his first goal since the NHL’S restart early in the third period as the Dallas Stars held on for a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames in a crucial Game 5 of their Western Conference playoff series Tuesday.

Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin teamed up for the first goal as the Stars took a 3-2 lead in the first-round series. They can reach the second round for the second straight year with a victory Thursday in Game 6.

Klingberg’s go-ahead goal came two days after he was initially credited with the overtime goal in a 5-4 win that evened the series. But his hard shot grazed Alexander Radulov’s stick, and the Russian was eventually credited with the winner.

“It doesn’t matter who scores the goals,” said Klingberg, who had three assists in Game 4. “The big thing is to be up 3-2 in the series.”

Anton Khudobin made 28 stops, including a glove save on Erik Gustafsson in the final two minutes before the Flames

called timeout and pulled netminder Cam Talbot.

■ Flyers 2, Canadiens 0: At Toronto, Michael Raffl and Phil Myers each scored to back Carter Hart, who stopped 29 shots for his second straight shutout. It’s the fifth time in NHL history a goalie has had back-to-back postseason shutouts before age 23 and the first since Felix Potvin in 1994. Raffl flicked the puck past veteran Carey Price for a top-shelf goal just 6:32 into the game. Myers made it 2-0 with 2:56 left in the second on a

shot that was set to wobble wide of the net.

■ Capitals 3, Islanders 2: At Toronto, Alex Ovechkin scored twice, including the go-ahead goal early in the third period as Washington rallied from two goals down to avoid a sweep. Evgeny Kuznetsov also scored for the Capitals to back Braden Holtby, who stopped 24 shots. Mathew Barzal and Jean-gabriel Pageau scored in the first period to give New York a 2-0 lead. Semyon Varlamov finished with 26 saves.
