Pitcher from UNLV excels in O’s debut

-

UNLV product Dean Kremer, a right-handed pitcher with Baltimore, made his major league debut Sunday in a start against the New York Yankees.

The 24-year-old allowed one run on one hit and three walks and struck out seven over six innings in the Orioles’ 5-1 win. Ranked Baltimore’s No. 10 prospect by Mlb.com, Kremer threw 47 of his 88 pitches for strikes.

The lone hit Kremer allowed was a second-inning single to Miguel Andujar. Kremer struck out the first two batters he faced, D.J. Lemahieu and Luke Voit.

Acquired by the Orioles in the July 2018 trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers for fourtime All-star Manny Machado, Kremer led the minors in strikeouts in 2018, when he went 10-5 with a 3.29 ERA and 178 strikeouts in 131 1/3 innings across three levels.

Last season, he was 9-6 with a 3.72 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 113 2/3 innings across three levels, topping out at Triple-a Norfolk. The Dodgers drafted him in the 14th round in 2016.

■ Yankees: Two-time All-star catcher Gary Sanchez, mired in a 3-for-28 slump that has sunk his batting average to .130, was benched by manager Aaron Boone. The 27-year-old does not have a multihit game this season, with seven home runs, 15 RBIS and 48 strikeouts over 114 plate appearances.

■ Blue Jays: Outfielder Teoscar Hernandez (left ribs strain) is to undergo an MRI examination and is expected to miss “serious time,” the Toronto Sun reported. The 27-year-old is batting .308 with 14 home runs, 27 RBIS, 27 runs and five steals in 39 games this season.

■ Phillies: Jay Bruce (left quadriceps strain) was placed on the 10-day IL, and fellow outfielder Roman Quinn was placed on the seven-day concussion list.

■ Red Sox: Utility player Yairo Munoz, off to a 10-for-21 start for Boston and batting leadoff Sunday, was lifted in the first inning with a right hip strain.

■ Padres: Luis Campusano (left wrist sprain), San Diego’s top catcher prospect who homered in his debut Friday, was placed on the 10-day IL.

■ Astros: Right-hander Lance Mccullers (neck nerve irritation) was placed on the 10day IL.

■ Pirates: Outfielder Anthony Alford

(right elbow fracture) was placed on the 60-day IL.
