Puerto Rican players to wear Clemente’s 21
Major League Baseball is allowing all Puerto Rican players to wear Roberto Clemente’s No. 21 Wednesday during the commemoration of the 19th annual Roberto Clemente Day, according to ESPN.
Other major leaguers will be given the option to wear a patch with the No. 21 to commemorate the player’s legacy.
Clemente, who was born in Puerto Rico, was the first Latin American player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was a 15-time All-star, had 3,000 career hits and won the the NL batting title four times. He also was a World Series MVP.
Clemente died on New Year’s Eve in 1972 when a cargo plane carrying aid to Nicaragua crashed.
■ Cardinals: Catcher Yadier Molina left Monday’s game against the Chicago Cubs because of a bruised left elbow.
■ Blue Jays: Outfielder Teoscar Hernandez was placed on the 10-day injured list because of a left oblique strain. Right-handed pitcher Wilmer Font also was placed on the injured list with a right shin contusion.
■ Athletics: Third baseman Matt Chapman is dealing with right hip tendinitis, but manager Bob Melvin said the team isn’t ready to place him on the injured list.
■ Cubs: Chicago announced it has signed veteran righty reliever Pedro Strop to a minor-league contract. The Cubs also claimed speedster Billy Hamilton and utility man Ildemaro Vargas off waivers.
■ Rangers: Shin-soo Choo left Monday’s game against Seattle with a sprained right hand. X-rays were negative. No word yet whether Choo will miss time.
