Mariners-padres set moved for air issues

-

The Mariners’ upcoming series against the Padres was relocated to San Diego because of air quality concerns in the Seattle area.

NOTEBOOK

Seattle will be the home team for all three games of the series that begins Friday, meaning the Padres could be in position to clinch their first postseason berth since 2006 while playing as visitors in their home park.

Seattle already had two games against the Giants moved from Seattle to San Francisco this week because of unhealthy air from numerous West Coast wildfires. The Mariners and Oakland played a Monday doubleheader in the smoke in Seattle, and players expressed concern.

■ Phillies: Right-hander Jake Arrieta (right hamstring strain) won’t pitch again in the regular season, manager Joe Girardi said. The 34-year-old 2015 Cy Young Award winner, who went 4-4 with a 5.08 ERA over nine starts this season, is in the final season of a three-year, $75 million deal that has a $22.5 million club option for 2021. Also, two-time All-star catcher J.T. Realmuto (hip flexor strain) was sidelined for a sixth straight game.

■ Giants: Umpire Edwin Moscoso ejected left-hander Tyler Anderson from his start in the third inning for vehemently protesting after issuing a walk. The 30-yearold Spring Valley product had allowed four runs on four hits and one walk. Also, outfielder Mike Yastrzemski (tight right calf) was removed in the second inning and will undergo an MRI examination Friday.

■ Dodgers: Tommy John surgery is “imminent” for left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson, manager Dave Roberts said. The 24-year-old, placed on the injured list Wednesday, had a 2.89 ERA and 27 strikeouts over 18 2/3 innings this season and has 140 strikeouts over 112 1/3 innings spanning three seasons.

■ Mets: Reigning Cy Young Award winner Jacob degrom (right hamstring spasm), removed from his Wednesday start after two innings, is reacting well to treatment, said manager Luis Rojas, noting he is uncertain if the 32-year-old right-hander will make his next scheduled start.

■ Cardinals: Right-hander Dakota Hudson (tight right elbow) was removed from his start at Pittsburgh after two innings. The 26-year-old is 3-2 with a 2.77 ERA in eight starts this season.

■ Rangers: TV broadcaster C.J. Nitkowski tested positive for COVID-19, prompting the team to use a radio simulcast on television.
