Yankees leaders not anticipating major overhaul

-

Not much is wrong with the New York Yankees in the view of manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman.

While stung by a five-game loss to Tampa Bay in an American League division series, the Yankees’ leadership does not anticipate large-scale changes for 2021.

Catcher Gary Sanchez’s job could be in danger after a third straight down season, but Gleyber Torres’ hold on shortstop is solid despite shaky defense. Starting pitching will be a focus for improvement.

New York had its second straight injury-filled season but was mostly healthy for the postseason. A second-place finish with a 33-27 record, seven games behind Tampa Bay, included the major league high in errors with 48 and the Yankees’ poorest fielding percentage since 1973.

Still, they swept Cleveland in the first round before getting ousted by the Rays. They haven’t reached the World Series since winning in 2009.

■ Giants: First baseman Brandon Belt had surgery last week to remove a bone spur from his right heel that sidelined the 32-year-old for summer camp and the season’s first week. The 10-year major league veteran had career highs in batting average (.309), on-base percentage (.425), slugging percentage (.591) and OPS (1.015) over 51 games in 2020. He is entering the final season of a five-year contract.

■ Tigers: Yankees hitting coach Marcus Thames met with team officials at least twice in the past week over Zoom to discuss the team’s managerial vacancy, the Detroit News reported. The 43-year-old spent six of his 10 major league seasons with Detroit.

■ White Sox: First baseman Jose Abreu was named Sporting News major league player of the year in a vote of 180 players. The 33-year-old three-time All-star had a majors-best 60 RBIS while batting .317 with 19 home runs and a .987 OPS in 60 games.

■ Angels: Catcher Max Stassi will be sidelined four to six months after surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip. He had surgery on his right hip in September 2019.
