NCAA penalizing Umass for basketball, tennis violations

-

The NCAA is stripping Massachusetts of wins in men’s basketball and women’s tennis and imposing a two-year probation for overpaying 12 athletes about $9,100 in financial aid over three years. Umass plans to appeal the Committee on Infractions’ decision to vacate wins, which include 59 basketball wins and an Atlantic 10 title in women’s tennis, from 2014 to 2017.

■ Basketball: Kansas forward Silvio de Sousa opted out of the season to “focus on personal matters,” coach Bill Self said. De Sousa joined the team midway through 201718 and helped it reach the Final Four. But he had to sit out the next season amid eligibility questions after his name surfaced in an FBI corruption probe and then served a 12-game suspension last year for his role in a brawl.
