Ore. virus tally 2nd-highest

New restrictio­ns planned for at least five counties this week

PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregon health officials reported 874 new coronaviru­s cases Sunday, the second-highest daily total of the pandemic following a record 988 cases on Saturday.

One new death was recorded Sunday, The Oregonian reported. At least 730 residents have died of the coronaviru­s and the total number of infections has surpassed 49,500.

Oregon’s totals come as the U.S. set another record for the daily number of coronaviru­s cases Saturday, reporting more than 126,000 positive cases and more than 1,000 deaths, according to the most recent data from Johns Hopkins University. It was the fourth day in a row with new cases surpassing 100,000.

State officials plan new restrictio­ns in at least five counties starting Wednesday.

The restrictio­ns include halting visitation­s to long-term-care facilities, reducing the capacity of indoor dining at restaurant­s to 50 people, encouragin­g all businesses to mandate work from home and urging Oregonians not to gather with people who do not live in their household, but if they do, to limit it to six people. In other developmen­ts:

■ For the third consecutiv­e day, New Mexico health officials reported nearly 1,300 additional COVID-19 cases on Sunday. They also reported 14 additional deaths.

State Department of Health officials said there was 1,214 new coronaviru­s cases Sunday.

■ Utah health authoritie­s on Sunday announced a new high in the number of coronaviru­s hospitaliz­ations as well as 2,386 more COVID-19 cases as the pandemic surges in the state.

Some 424 people were hospitaliz­ed with COVID-19 on Sunday, according to a statement issued by Charla Haley, a spokespers­on with the Utah Department of Health.

Utah’s seven-day average of new daily cases has reached a record 2,290. In the past two weeks, Utah’s positivity average — the percentage of coronaviru­s tests that are positive — has increased from 18.5 percent to 20.6 percent, according to state data.

■ Texas on Sunday reported 5,404 new cases of the coronaviru­s, with almost 2,000 of those cases coming from the hard-hit El Paso area, state health officials said.

The state’s total number of cases since the pandemic began is nearing 1 million, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, which puts the number of cases at more than 985,000.

■ The Minnesota Department of Health on Sunday reported an increase of 5,924 positive tests of the coronaviru­s, a single-day high in the state that ranks 12th in the country for new cases per capita in the last two weeks.
