No. 2 Baylor surges, downs No. 5 Illinois

INDIANAPOL­IS — Adam Flagler had 18 points and was one of four scorers in double figures for No. 2 Baylor, which pulled away late Wednesday to beat No. 5 Illinois 82-69 in the Jimmy V Classic’s second game.

The Bears (3-0) won for the first time this season with coach Scott Drew on the sideline. He missed two games after a positive COVID-19 test.

Ayo Dosunmu scored 18 points and Giorgi Beshanishv­ili 15 for the Illini (3-1).

UNLV transfer Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua started the decisive stretch by making two free throws with 12:51 left. That broke a 43-all tie and spurred Baylor to six straight points. After an Illinois 3-pointer, Baylor scored five more points and then took control with another run, this time 9-0.

■ No. 1 Gonzaga 87, No. 11 West Virginia 82: At Indianapol­is, Joel Ayayi scored 21 points for the Bulldogs (3-0), who took control with a late 13-4 run. Andrew Nembhard and Corey Kispert scored 19 points each for Gonzaga, which trailed 3324 late in the first half. Derek Culver had 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Mountainee­rs (3-1).

■ No. 17 Texas 69, No. 14 North Carolina 67: At Asheville, N.C., Matt Coleman III hit a stepback jumper with 0.1 seconds left and totaled 22 points for the Longhorns (4-0) in the Maui Invitation­al final. The Tar Heels (3-1) trailed by 16 in the first half.

Missouri 83, No. 21 Oregon 75:

At Omaha, Neb., Xavier Pinson scored 19 of his 22 points in the second half for the Tigers (2-0), who built a 17-point lead. Rutgers transfer Eugene Omoruyi had 31 points and 11 rebounds for the Ducks (0-1).

■ No. 22 Florida State 86, North Florida 58: At Tallahasse­e, Fla., M.J. Walker scored 17 points for the Seminoles (1-0), who forced the Ospreys (0-4) into 24 turnovers and had a 4227 edge in rebounds.

■ No. 23 Ohio State 77, Morehead State 44: At Columbus, Ohio, E.J. Liddell scored 16 points for the Buckeyes (3-0), who led 37-27 at halftime and held the Eagles (1-3) to 25-percent shooting.

■ Brigham Young 74, St. John’s 68: At Uncasville, Conn., Alex Barcello had 20 points and Gideon George 15 rebounds for the Cougars (4-1), who overcame 19 turnovers. Julian Champagnie scored 25 points for the Red Storm (3-1).

■ Wyoming 94, Incarnate Word 83, OT: At Laramie, Wyo., Marcus Williams scored 20 points for the Cowboys (2-1), who overcame an 11-point deficit. Keaston Willis scored 25 points for the Cardinals (1-2), who shot 51.6 percent.

■ San Francisco 85, UNR 60: At Reno, Khalil Shabazz scored 22 points for the Dons (3-2), who shot 46.0 percent and held the Wolf Pack (3-1) to 31.6 percent. Zane Meeks scored 15 points for UNR, which had 16 turnovers.

■ San Diego State 83, St. Katherine 41: At San Diego, Jordan Schakel scored 16 points for the Aztecs (3-0), who surged past the Firebirds (1-3) with a 19-0 first-half run.

WOMEN

■ No. 6 Mississipp­i State 106, New Orleans 51: At Starkville, Miss., Jessika Carter had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs (2-0), who held the Privateers (1-1) to 32-percent shooting and had a 51-16 edge in rebounds.
