Jayhawks avoid overtime after missed free throw

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Jalen Wilson hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 42 seconds remaining, then watched as Marcus Zegarowski missed the last of three free throws after fouling him with 1.1 seconds left, allowing fifthranke­d Kansas (5-1) to escape with a 73-72 victory over No. 8 Creighton on Tuesday night.

Wilson finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Jayhawks.

“I just had a lot of confidence in myself. My team has a lot of confidence in me,” said Wilson, who missed most of last season with an injury. “We told each other, ‘We’re going to win this game. We’re going to win this game.’”

Zegarowski finished with 16 points. Mahoney led the Bluejays (3-1) with 19 points, while Christian Bishop and Damien Jefferson had 13 apiece.

No. 3 Iowa 93, No. 16 North Carolina 80:

At Iowa City, Iowa, Jordan Bohannon scored 24 points to lead four players in double figures for the Hawkeyes (4-0). Garrison Brooks scored 17 points to lead five players in double figures for the Tar Heels (3-2).

■ No. 6 Illinois 83, No. 10 Duke: At Durham, N.C., Ayo Dosunmu scored 18 points and Kofi Cockburn added 13 points for the Fighting Illini (4-1), who who jumped to a 14-2 lead and never looked back. Matthew Hurt scored 19 points to lead the Blue Devils (2-2), who shot 40 percent and made 5 of 22 3-pointers.

No. 12 Tennessee 56, Colorado 47:

At Knoxville, Tennessee, Yves Pons led the Vols (1-0) with 10 rebounds, though they were outrebound­ed 38-32. Reserve Jeriah Horne scored 15 points for the Buffaloes (2-1), who had a 10-day layoff, then traveled halfway across the country to finally play a game, and the rust was evident as the Buffs had 23 turnovers.

At Piscataway, New Jersey, Ron Harper Jr. scored 26 points on 5 of 8 from 3-point range and Montez Mathis added 19 points for the Scar

career-high 24 points on 10 of 14 shooting including two 3-pointers for the Nittany Lions (3-1). Jalen Cone scored 11 points for the Hokies (4-1), which shot just 37 percent (20 of 54).

MOUNTAIN WEST Utah State 90, College of Idaho 64:

At Logan, Utah, Justin Bean had 21 points and seven rebounds to lead four players in double figures for the Aggies (2-3). Ricardo Time scored 16 points for the Yotes (1-2), who trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half.
