No. 21 Duke cruises to victory at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Sophomore Matthew Hurt scored 18 points, and three Duke freshmen also cracked double digits as the 21st-ranked Blue Devils opened Atlantic Coast Conference play Wednesday by beating Notre Dame 75-65.

D.J. Steward had 16 points and seven rebounds, Jeremy Roach 14 points and Jaemyn Brakefield 10 points for Duke (3-2, 1-0), which shot 52 percent and led from the second minute onward.

Dane Goodwin scored 25 points for the Fighting Irish (2-3, 0-1), hitting 10 of 12 shots from the field with four 3-pointers. Prentiss Hubb added 12 points.

■ No. 7 Villanova 85, Butler 66: At Villanova, Pa., Collin Gillespie and Jeremiah Robinson-earl each scored 18 points for the Wildcats (6-1, 2-0 Big East), who downed the Bulldogs (1-1, 0-1) to make Jay Wright the 39th Division I coach to reach 600 wins.

■ No. 11 Texas 79, Sam Houston State 63: At Austin, Texas, Courtney Ramey had 17 points and six assists for the Longhorns (6-1), who led 44-26 at halftime and held the Bearkats (3-5) to 35.2-percent shooting.

■ Purdue 67, No. 20 Ohio State 60: At West Lafayette, Ind., Trevion Williams had 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for the Boilermake­rs (5-2, 1-0 Big Ten), who led 38-33 at halftime and held the Buckeyes (51, 0-1) to 37.9-percent shooting.

WOMEN

■ No. 7 Baylor 86, Southern 52: At Waco, Texas, Queen Egbo had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Bears (5-1), who have won a nation-best 59 straight home games. The Jaguars (0-4) were outrebound­ed 53-21.

■ No. 24 Depaul 86, No. 9 Kentucky 82: At Chicago, Sonya Morris scored 23 points for the Blue Demons (3-2), who took the lead for good midway through the third quarter. Chasity Patterson had 22 points for the Wildcats (6-1).
