Sun Belt title game off after positive virus test
The Sun Belt title game Saturday between No. 9 Coastal Carolina (11-0, 8-0) and No. 17 Louisiana-lafayette (9-1, 7-1) was canceled because of a positive COVID-19 test in the Chanticleers program. A position group would have been unavailable because of contact tracing. Both teams were in contention for a New Year’s Six bowl spot with a win.
■ Kansas: Coach Les Miles got a vote of confidence from athletic director Jeff Long, despite the Jayhawks (0-9) finishing their second winless season since 1954. Miles, 67, enters the third year of a five-year deal that pays him $2.775 million annually.
■ Iowa State: The No. 8 Cyclones swept the Big 12’s top awards as determined by a vote of league coaches, with running back Breece Hall named top offensive player, linebacker Mike Rose top defensive player and Matt Campbell coach of the year.
■ Air Force: The team will play Army at a neutral site for the first time since 1965 when the game moves to Globe Life Field in 2021 and 2022.
Next year’s game is to be the first FBS game at the Texas stadium.
■ Maryland: The team’s game Saturday against Michigan State was nixed for a second time because 18 Terrapins players and six staff members tested positive for COVID-19 since Dec. 10.
■ Indiana: Tom Allen was voted
Big Ten coach of the year by league coaches and media, joining Bill Mallory (1986 and 1987) as the lone Hoosiers coaches to win both awards.
■ Boston College: Junior Hunter Long, who led FBS tight ends in catches (57) yards receiving (685) this season, declared for the NFL draft.
■ Arizona: Starting quarterback Grant Gunnell entered the NCAA transfer portal and will have three years of eligibility at his next school.
■ Virginia Tech: Starting quarterback Hendon Hooker entered the NCAA transfer portal with one year of eligibility left.
■ UCLA: The Bruins (3-3) will not pursue the chance to play in a bowl game.
