BYU counters surge by No. 18 San Diego State

SAN DIEGO — Alex Barcello scored 22 points for Brigham Young, which blew a 17-point lead before beating No. 18 San Diego State 72-62 on Friday.

Matt Mitchell scored 26 of his 35 points in the second half for the Aztecs (5-1), spurring a 14-0 run with three 3-pointers and a dunk that tied it at 61.

Matt Haarms and Brandon Averette each had 10 points for the Cougars (7-2), who led 35-20 at halftime after holding SDSU to 25-percent shooting and forcing eight turnovers. BYU held a 40-26 edge in rebounds.

Jordan Schakel had three points on 1-for-9 shooting for the Aztecs after scoring 25 in a Dec. 10 win at Arizona State.

■ No. 8 West Virginia 70, Iowa State 65:

At Morgantown, W.VA., Miles Mcbride’s 18 points included the go-ahead free throws with 21 seconds left for the Mountainee­rs (7-1, 1-0 Big 12), who made 14 of 16 free throws in the final six minutes. Rasir Bolton scored 25 points for the Cyclones (1-4, 0-2), who had 21 turnovers.

■ No. 10 Tennessee 103, Tennessee Tech 49:

At Knoxville, Tenn., Jaden Springer had 21 points, six assists and six rebounds for the Volunteers (4-0), who had runs of 11-0 and 17-1. The Golden Eagles (0-8) trailed 49-22 at halftime.

MOUNTAIN WEST ■ Utah State 63, Northern Colorado 50:

At Logan, Utah, Justin Bean had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Aggies (3-3), who held a 40-30 edge in rebounds. The Bears (3-2) trailed 28-27 at halftime.

■ UNR 74, Air Force 57:

At Reno, Desmond Cambridge Jr. scored 23 points for the Wolf Pack (6-2, 1-2), who shot 51.1 percent and held a 39-23 edge in rebounds. The Falcons (2-3, 0-1) trailed 41-39 at halftime.

■ Santa Clara at San Jose State, canceled:

An issue prevented the Spartans’ COVID-19 test results from arriving in time, the university said.

WOMEN ■ No. 6 Arizona 62, Colorado 59:

At Boulder, Colo., Aari Mcdonald made 8 of 8 fourth-quarter free throws and totaled 24 points for the Wildcats (5-0, 4-0 Pac-12), who shot 34 percent. The Buffaloes (3-4, 1-3)led by 12 late in the third quarter.

■ No. 7 Baylor 136, Northweste­rn State 43:

At Waco, Texas, Nalyssa Smith scored 30 points on 12-for-15 shooting for the Lady Bears (6-1), who shot 67.9 percent. The Lady Demons (0-3) hit 10 3-pointers but shot 21.1 percent (4-for-19) inside the arc.
