Washington releases quarterback Haskins
Washington released 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins on Monday, less than 24 hours after he committed three turnovers in a loss to Carolina and in the aftermath of another violation of pandemic protocols.
Haskins started in place of injured quarterback Alex Smith despite being disciplined for breaking COVID-19 rules by partying with several people without a mask. He was fined $40,000 and stripped of his captaincy, but coach Ron Rivera opted to stick with Haskins because Smith was still injured and he didn’t have another established QB on the roster.
Rivera said Monday morning that either Smith or Taylor Heinicke would start the regular-season finale at Philadelphia with the NFC East title on the line.
■ Bengals: Running back Joe Mixon (foot) will not play in Week 17. Mixon had been on injured reserve since Week 6.
■ Cardinals: Coch Kliff Kingsbury said the team is “hopeful” quarterback Kyler Murray (leg) can play in Week 17.
■ Eagles: Quarterback Jalen Hurts will start the final game of the 2020 season, coach Doug Pederson announced.
■ Jets: Running back Frank Gore has a bruised lung that coach Adam Gase said Monday will keep Gore out of the season finale at New England on Sunday.
■ Panthers: Coach Matt Rhule says he’s “probably leaning towards no” when it comes to running back Christian Mccaffrey’s (thigh) availability for Sunday, but he will know more on Wednesday.
■ Rams: Quarterback Jared Goff will undergo surgery on his right thumb and is hopeful to return for the playoffs, should the L.A. Rams advance.
■ Ravens: Baltimore was fined $250,000 by the NFL for violating COVID-19 protocols, a person with direct knowledge of the punishment told The Associated Press on Monday.
The team was not docked draft picks for the violations.
■ Texans: Coach Romeo Crennel told reporters that quarterback Deshaun Watson (elbow) will play in Week 17 if cleared by the team’s medical staff.
■ Titans: Kicker Stephen Gostkowski was placed on the reserve/covid-19 list.
