James, Harrell excel as Lakers battle past Bulls

Chicago’s Lavine scores 38, misses late go-ahead shot

LOS ANGELES — Lebron James had 28 points, seven rebounds and seven assists as the Los Angeles Lakers overcame the absence of two injured starters for a 117-115 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Friday.

Zach Lavine scored 38 points, but the UCLA product missed a 17-foot jumper with 4.7 seconds left that would have put Chicago ahead.

Montrezl Harrell had 17 points and 14 rebounds for the defending NBA champions, who have won five of six. They were missing injured starters Anthony Davis (calf ) and Kentavious Caldwell-pope (ankle).

Lavine scored 19 points in the first quarter for the Bulls, who have lost two straight in California following an impressive win at Portland.

Dennis Schroder, who scored 17 points, hit a 3-pointer with 2:39 to play to put the Lakers up 113-107, but Chicago trimmed the lead to 116-115 on Garrett Temple’s 3-pointer with 37 seconds left.

Grizzlies 115, Nets 110: At Memphis, Tenn., Findlay Prep product Dillon Brooks scored 24 points for Memphis, which lost center Jonas Valanciuna­s for the second half because of health and safety protocols. Caris Levert scored 25 of his 43 points after intermissi­on for Brooklyn, which trailed by 22 in the first half.

■ Jazz 131, Bucks 118: At Milwaukee, Donovan Mitchell scored 32 points for Utah, which made a franchise-record 25 3-pointers in 53 tries and didn’t trail after the first quarter. Giannis Antetokoun­mpo had 35 points for Milwaukee, which won its first four home games by an average of 23.5 points.

Warriors 115, Clippers 105:

At San Francisco, Stephen Curry scored 19 of his 38 points in the third quarter for Golden State, which trailed by 21 late in that period. Paul George had 25 points and Kawhi Leonard 24 for Los Angeles, which had won four straight over the Warriors.

Pistons 110, Suns 105, OT:

At Detroit, Jerami Grant had 31 points, 10 rebounds and the assist on Mason Plumlee’s tying dunk with 9.6 seconds left in regulation for Detroit, which overcame a 23-point second-quarter deficit. The Pistons scored the first nine points of overtime.

■ Thunder 101, Knicks 89:

At New York, Shai Gilgeous-alexander had 25 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for Oklahoma City, which took control with an 11-3 fourth-quarter run. Julius Randle had 18 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for New York.

■ Rockets 132, Magic 90: At Houston, UNLV product Christian Wood had 22 points and 15

rebounds for Houston, which hit a season-high 22 3-pointers. Nikola Vucevic had 22 points and 12 rebounds for Orlando, which trailed by 36 after three quarters.

At Sacramento, Calif., Pascal Siakam had 17 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds for Toronto, which hit 20 3-pointers and set a franchise scoring record. Fred Vanvleet had 34 points for the Raptors (2-6), who had lost three straight.

At New Orleans, Gordon Hayward scored 26 points for Charlotte, which overcame an 18-point second-quarter deficit. Zion Williamson had 26 points for New Orleans, which lost its third straight — all at home.

■ Celtics 116, Wizards 107:

At Boston, Jayson Tatum scored 32 points and Jaylen Brown 27 for Boston, which led by 28 in the third quarter. Bradley Beal scored 41 points for Washington, which pulled within 99-95 with 7:36 left.
