Oregon defensive coordinator Avalos to be Boise State coach
Boise State will hire Oregon defensive coordinator Andy Avalos, a former Broncos linebacker and assistant, as coach, the Idaho Press reported. The 39-year-old spent the past two seasons helping the Ducks win two Pac-12 titles. He previously was a Boise State assistant for seven seasons, the final three as defensive coordinator.
■ Michigan: Coach Jim Harbaugh signed a five-year extension through 2025. The 57-year-old is 49-22 in six seasons, including 34-16 in the Big Ten. The new deal’s annual base salary is $4 million, about half of what Harbaugh made in 2020, though he can make more in incentives.
■ Penn State: Mike
Yurcich was hired as offensive coordinator. The 45-yearold was Texas’ offensive coordinator in 2020 after one season at Ohio State and six at Oklahoma State. The Longhorns (7-3) averaged 475.4 yards per game and scored 52 offensive TDS in 2020.
■ Tennessee: Quarterback Hendon Hooker joined the team as a graduate transfer. The Greensboro, North Carolina, native started 15 of 25 games the past four seasons at Virginia Tech, throwing for 2,894 yards and 22 TDS and running for 1,033 yards and 15 TDS.
■ Arizona: Don Brown was hired as defensive coordinator. The 65-year-old spent the past five seasons guiding Michigan’s defense after stints as defensive coordinator with Boston College, Connecticut and Maryland in a four-decade career.
■ Notre Dame: Marcus Freeman was hired as defensive coordinator, a role the 35-yearold filled the past three seasons at Cincinnati. The Bearcats (9-1) ranked 13th among FBS teams in total defense and eighth in scoring defense in 2020.
