Hat trick lifts Oilers

Mcdavid delivers in victory over Canucks

EDMONTON, Alberta — Connor Mcdavid had a hat trick and an assist, and Ryan Nugent-hopkins scored twice and added an assist as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-2 on Thursday.

Leon Draisaitl, the NHL’S top scorer last season, had four assists to help the Oilers rebound from a 5-3 loss to the Canucks a night earlier in both teams’ opener. Mikko Koskinen had 38 saves for the Oilers.

Former Golden Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt and Tyler Motte scored for Vancouver to back Thatcher Demko, who stopped 41 shots.

Edmonton scored twice with the man advantage after going 0-for-4 on Wednesday. The Oilers had the NHL’S top power play last season at 29.5 percent.

■ Sharks 4, Coyotes 3, SO: At Glendale, Ariz., Martin Jones stopped Clayton Keller in a shootout for San Jose, which rebounded after Phil Kessel capped Arizona’s two-goal comeback by scoring with 3.2 seconds left in regulation.

■ Predators 3, Blue Jackets 1: At Nashville, Tenn., Filip Forsberg scored the tiebreakin­g goal at 5:48 of the third period to back Juuse Saros, who had 29 saves in Nashville’s 11th win in its past 14 home openers.

■ Islanders 4, Rangers 0: At New York, Brock Nelson, Anders Lee and Mathew Barzal scored in the first period, and Semyon Varlamov stopped 24 shots in his 28th shutout and third with the Isles.

■ Hurricanes 3, Red Wings 0: At Detroit, Nino Niederreit­er scored on Carolina’s second shot 3:38 in, and Petr Mrazek had 14 saves in his 14th shutout. Thomas Greiss stopped 40 Hurricanes shots.

■ Bruins 3, Devils 2, SO: At Newark, N.J., Brad Marchand had a goal and an assist before scoring the lone shootout goal, spoiling Lindy Ruff ’s debut as New Jersey coach.

■ Wild 4, Kings 3, OT: At Los Angeles, Kirill Kaprizov had two assists and scored with 1:13 left in overtime, capping Minnesota’s rally from a 3-1 deficit after two periods.

■ Capitals 6, Sabres 4: At Buffalo, N.Y., T.J. Oshie had a goal and two assists for Washington, which built a 4-1 lead in Peter Laviolette’s debut as Capitals coach.

■ Jets 4, Flames 3, OT: At Winnipeg, Manitoba, Patrik Laine scored his second goal of the game 1:18 into overtime to back Connor Hellebuyck, who stopped 23 shots.
