Tatis gets 14-year, $340M extension from San Diego

Shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. agreed to a 14-year, $340 million extension with

San Diego, multiple sources reported. The deal is the longest in MLB history and third-largest behind the 12-year deals of Mike Trout ($426.5M) and Mookie Betts ($365M). Tatis, 22, won a Silver Slugger award after hitting .277 with 17 home runs and 45 RBIS in 2020, when he was fourth in National League MVP voting. He has hit .301 with 39 homers, 98 RBIS and 27 steals in 143 major league games.

■ Mets: Outfielder Tim Tebow retired. The 33-year-old 2007 Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL quarterbac­k, who had been invited to big league spring training, returned to baseball in 2016 for the first time since his junior year of high school. He batted .223 with 18 homers and 107 RBIS in 287 minor league games, including .163 at Triple-a in 2019.

■ Cubs: Free-agent reliever Brandon Workman agreed to a one-year, $1 million deal, with another $2 million available in incentives. The 32-year-old right-hander is 25-20 with a 3.89 ERA in six major league seasons, including 10-1 with a 1.88 ERA and 16 saves with Boston in 2019.

■ Marlins: Reliever John Curtiss was acquired from Tampa Bay for minor league first baseman Evan Edwards. Curtiss, a 27-year-old right-hander, went 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA over 17 games in 2020 and has a 3.83 ERA in four major league seasons.

■ Twins: Free-agent right-hander Matt Shoemaker agreed to a one-year, $2 million deal. The 34-year-old is 43-33 with a 3.86 ERA in eight major league seasons with the Los Angeles Angels and Toronto. Injuries have limited him to 18 starts since 2018.

■ Indians: Reliever Cody Allen, the team’s career saves leader with 149, retired. The 32-year-old right-hander went 24-31 with a 3.14 ERA, 153 saves and 593 strikeouts in 463 2/3 innings over eight major league seasons, the first seven with Cleveland.

■ Giants: Free-agent right-hander Aaron Sanchez agreed to a one-year, $4 million deal, with another $2.5 million available in incentives. The 28-year-old 2016 All-star is 34-33 with a 3.98 ERA in six major league seasons, five with Toronto.

■ Brewers: Free-agent left-hander Brett Anderson agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million deal, with another $1 million available in incentives. The 33-year-old is 63-65 with a 4.06 ERA in 12 major league seasons with six teams.

■ Red Sox: Japanese right-hander Hirokazu Sawamura signed a two-year deal. The 32-year-old went 48-52 with a 2.77 ERA and 75 saves in 10 Nippon Profession­al Baseball seasons.
