Lady Rebels’ Young wins MW player of week award

Freshman center Desi-rae Young was named the Mountain West women’s basketball player of the week Monday after leading the Lady Rebels to a road sweep at San Diego State.

Young averaged a double-double for the week — 16 points and 10.5 rebounds.

■ MLB: Atlanta claimed outfielder Phillip Ervin off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. Ervin was added to the 40-man roster Monday and will compete for a backup position.

■ Tennis: Naomi Osaka’s Australian Open championsh­ip moved her up one spot to No. 2 in the WTA rankings Monday, while men’s finalist Daniil Medvedev rose to a career-best No. 3 behind winner Novak Djokovic on the ATP list.

American Jennifer Brady, 25, who was the runner-up to Osaka in the Australian Open, jumped 11 spots to No. 13, her first time inside the Top 20.
