■ Texas Gov. Greg Abbott accused President Joe Biden of ignoring a crisis at the border.
Abbott says Biden ignoring requests to address slew of immigrants
who were apprehended last year was about 90,000,” Abbott said. “In just the first 2½ months of this year alone, there was far more than that, about 108,000.”
These numbers include 800 criminal immigrants, including people who were previously arrested in the United States and deported, Abbott said.
Abbott praised the Texas Legislature for providing $800 million a year in the state budget to pay for law enforcement officers, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the National Guard and boats, helicopters and more to keep track of what is happening and to allow boots on the ground.
“Texas is doing what the federal government should be doing,” Abbott said. “Immigration is a federal responsibility and because the Biden administration is not doing it, the state of Texas has to step up and use every tool that we can to try to help secure the border.”
Meanwhile, Montana’s top prosecutor has joined a lawsuit filed last month by Arizona that seeks to halt Biden’s new immigration policies.
The lawsuit was filed Feb. 3 by
Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich to stop a 100-day moratorium on deportations issued by the Biden administration.
Also, Florida is suing Biden’s administration over new directives that have halted detentions of some immigrants who have served time in prison.
Florida’s Attorney General Ashley Moody said on Tuesday that the new guidance has resulted in immigration officials declining to take custody of people who have served sentences for burglary, drug trafficking and other crimes.
