Arizona State thrives late

Sun Devils top Washington State; Cal stuns Stanford; Utah holds on

Alonzo Verge Jr. scored the goahead basket on a challenged drive with 11 seconds left, lifting Arizona State past Washington State 64-59 in the Pac-12 Conference men’s basketball tournament Wednesday at T-mobile Arena.

Verge totaled 26 points, and the eighth-seeded Sun Devils (11-13) closed on a 10-2 run. They next face top-seeded Oregon (19-5) in a quarterfin­al at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Isaac Bonton scored 18 points for the ninth-seeded Cougars (14-13), who committed four of their 20 turnovers in the final 2:28.

■ California 76, Stanford 58:

Matt Bradley scored 19 points for the 11th-seeded Golden Bears (9-19), who shot 53.8 percent and paid back the sixth-seeded Cardinal (14-13) for two February losses by a total of 21 points.

Ryan Betley added 13 points for Cal, which never trailed. It next faces third-seeded and 23rd-ranked Colorado (20-7) in a quarterfin­al at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Jaiden Delaire scored 14 points for Stanford, which closed on a five-game skid. The Cardinal were outrebound­ed 31-22.

■ Utah 98, Washington 95: Tim Allen had 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead six double-figure scorers for the seventh-seeded Utes (12-12), who built a 17-point lead and held off the 10th-seeded Huskies (5-21).

Alfonso Plummer scored 21 points for Utah, which next faces second-seeded and 24th-ranked Southern California (21-6) in a quarterfin­al at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Quade Green scored 31 points for Washington, which finished with its worst winning percentage (.192) since going 5-22 in 1993-94.

MOUNTAIN WEST

At the Thomas & Mack Center

■ Wyoming 111, San Jose State 80: Graham Ike scored 21 of his 32 points in the first half for the eighth-seeded Cowboys (14-10), who set a tournament record for first half-points and buried the ninth-seeded Spartans (5-16).

Wyoming, which led 59-45 at intermissi­on, next faces top-seeded and 19th-ranked San Diego State (20-4) in a quarterfin­al at noon Thursday.

Xavier Dusell added 19 points for the Cowboys, who shot a season-high 59.7 percent. Their 111 points are the third-most in tournament history and the most since 2002.

Hunter Maldonado had 17 points and nine rebounds and Marcus Williams 15 points and 10 assists for Wyoming, which totaled four turnovers. Richard Washington scored 18 points for the Spartans.

■ Fresno State 85, New Mexico 77: Deon Stroud scored 19 points for the sixth-seeded Bulldogs (12-11), who overcame a one-point halftime deficit with a season-best 51-point second half to down the 11th-seeded Lobos (6-16).

Isaiah Hill added 17 points for Fresno State, which next plays third-seeded Colorado State (17-5) in a quarterfin­al at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Anthony Holland had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Orlando Robinson 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs. They held a 36-23 edge in rebounds and shot 58.7 percent. Jeremiah Francis III scored 19 points for New Mexico.

WOMEN MOUNTAIN WEST

At the Thomas & Mack Center

■ Wyoming 59, Fresno State 56: Alba Sanchez Ramos blocked Haley Cavinder’s potential tying 3-pointer in the final second, and the seventh-seeded Cowgirls (14-9) edged the fourth-seeded Bulldogs (16-10) for their first Mountain West tournament title.

Quinn Weidemann scored 14 points and Mckinley Bradshaw 13 for Wyoming, which trailed 22-16 after one quarter before holding Fresno State to two second-quarter points en route to a 32-24 intermissi­on lead.

Sanchez Ramos had eight points and seven rebounds, helping the Cowgirls to a 42-32 edge on the boards. They led 47-41 entering the fourth quarter in their sixth straight win.

Aly Gamez scored 15 points for the Bulldogs, who were in the Mountain West title game for the sixth time in nine years.

The teams split two regular-season meetings in Wyoming in January, with the games decided by two and three points.

BIG WEST

At Michelob Ultra Arena

■ UC Davis 61, Cal State Fullerton 54: Cierra Hall had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the top-seeded Aggies (11-2), who topped the ninth-seeded Titans (4-18) to advance to a semifinal for the seventh straight season.

UC Davis, which led for all but 65 seconds of the first quarter, next faces fifth-seeded Hawaii (9-7) in a semifinal at noon Friday.

Joy Krupa had 25 points and 16 rebounds for the Titans, who shot 16.7 percent in the first half and trailed 32-16 at intermissi­on.

■ Hawaii 81, Cal State Bakersfiel­d 67: Jaydynn Alexander had 17 points to lead four double-figure scorers for the fifth-seeded Rainbow Wahine (9-7), who paid back the fourth-seeded Roadrunner­s (9-9) for two mid-january losses.

Olivia Davies scored 16 points for Hawaii, which led 39-36 at halftime. Andie Easley scored 17 points, Lexus Green 15 and Vanessa Austin 14 for Bakersfiel­d, which shot 38.7 percent and was outrebound­ed 48-32.

The Roadrunner­s won the teams’ two previous meetings by a total of 15 points.

■ Cal Poly 61, Long Beach State 60: Maddie Willett’s layup in the final second sent the sixth-seeded Mustangs (13-10) past the third-seeded 49ers (12-9).

Sierra Campisano had 30 points and 12 rebounds for Cal Poly, which next faces second-seeded UC Irvine (14-8) in a semifinal at 3 p.m. Friday.

Abbey Ellis had 12 points and 10 rebounds, helping the Mustangs to a 42-25 edge on the boards. They led 26-25 at halftime but trailed 42-39 entering the fourth quarter.

Naomi Hunt scored 14 points for Long Beach State, which shot 35.7 percent. Cal Poly shot 35.8 percent.

■ UC Irvine 92, UC Santa Barbara 90: Haleigh Talbert hit a go-ahead layup with seven seconds left for the second-seeded Anteaters (14-8), who overcame a six-point halftime deficit to edge the seventh-seeded Gauchos (7-14).

Chloe Webb had 20 points to lead six double-figure scorers for Irvine, which shot 55.9 percent.

Taylor Mole scored 24 points, Danae Miller 18, Megan Anderson 16 and Doris Jones 15 for UCSB, which led 70-67 entering the fourth quarter. The Gauchos shot 49.2 percent.

■ New Mexico State 56, Seattle 46: Shania Harper had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the fourth-seeded Aggies (9-11), who never trailed the fifth-seeded Redhawks (11-14) in their fourth straight win.

Aaliyah Prince had 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals for New Mexico State, which next plays top-seeded California Baptist (22-0) in a semifinal at 11 a.m. Friday.

Irena Korolenko scored 15 points for Seattle, which shot 27.0 percent while missing 25 of 30 3-point tries in its fifth straight loss. The Aggies shot 39.0 percent and held a 46-33 edge in rebounds.

■ Grand Canyon 67, Texas-rio Grande Valley 54: Tiarra Brown had 16 points and eight rebounds for the third-seeded Antelopes (17-6), who scored 22 points off 18 turnovers by the sixth-seeded Vaqueros (6-14).

Ny’dajah Jackson scored 11 points for Grand Canyon, which next plays second-seeded Utah Valley (13-5) in a semifinal at 2 p.m. Friday.

Amara Graham scored 24 points for UTRGV, which shot 34.6 percent and was outscored 34-18 in the paint.

■ Utah Valley 61, Chicago State 43: Maria Carvalho scored 15 points and Madison Grange 13 for the second-seeded Wolverines (13-5), who scored 20 points off 25 turnovers by the seventh-seeded Cougars (0-14).

Nadia Thorman-mckey had 18 points and six rebounds and Christina Britter 10 points and nine rebounds for Chicago State, which held a 33-31 edge in rebounds.

Utah Valley, which won its sixth straight, shot 45.8 percent and led 45-23 entering the fourth quarter.
