Beavers upend top seed, move to Pac-12 final

Ethan Thompson scored 16 points, Rodrigue Andela added 13, and Oregon State withstood a late rally to beat top-seeded Oregon 75-64 in a Pac-12 men’s basketball tournament semifinal Friday at T-mobile Arena.

The fifth-seeded Beavers (16-12) reached the conference semifinals for the first time since 2012 and dominated early, building a 19-point lead by the second half’s midpoint.

They next face third-seeded and 23rd-ranked Colorado (22-7) in the final at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The Ducks (20-6) went on a 15-3 run to pull within 61-56 with 4½ minutes left. Jarod Lucas hit a 3-pointer to stop the spurt, and Oregon State pushed the lead back to 12.

Picked to finish last in the Pac-12, the Beavers will play in the Pac-12 title game for the first time since 1988.

Chris Duarte, L.J. Figueroa and Eugene Omoruyi each had 14 points for the Ducks, who missed 19 of 25 3-point tries.

■ No. 23 Colorado 72, No. 24 Southern California 70:

D’shawn Schwartz scored the decisive points on a rebound slam with 3.3 seconds left, and Mckinley Wright IV shook off an elbow to the head to score 24 points for the third-seeded Buffaloes (22-7).

The second-seeded Trojans (22-7) trailed by 10 with 4½ minutes left but tied it after Evan Mobley hit a 3-pointer and Tahj Eaddy scored on a three-point play with 35 seconds left.

Mobley had 29 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. USC, which trailed 39-30 at halftime, didn’t get off a final shot after Wright deflected a pass in Colorado’s end.

At the Thomas & Mack Center

■ No. 19 San Diego State 77, UNR 70:

Matt Mitchell had 24 points and eight rebounds for the top-seeded Aztecs (22-4), who held off the fifth-seeded Wolf Pack (16-10) to advance to their fourth straight league title game and seventh in eight years.

Jordan Schakel scored 15 points and Trey Pulliam 13 for SDSU, which has won 13 straight games and six in a row over UNR. The Aztecs led 37-32 at intermissi­on and opened the second half with an 11-5 run.

Grant Sherfield had 25 points, Warren Washington 19 and Desmond Cambridge Jr. 17 for the Wolf Pack, who were held without a field goal for a 7:25 first-half stretch and shot 37.5 percent in the second half.

At Orleans Arena

■ New Mexico State 78, Utah Valley 62:

Donnie Tillman scored 23 points and Jabari Rice 13 for the third-seeded Aggies (12-7), who held the second-seeded Wolverines (11-11) to 29.8-pecent shooting and never trailed.

NMSU, which shot 45.5 percent and led 32-23 at halftime, next faces top-seeded Grand Canyon (16-6)inthefinal­at7p.m. Saturday.

Trey Woodbury scored 34 points, hitting 15 of 16 free throws, for Utah Valley. Fardaws Aimaq had 13 rebounds for the Wolverines, who had a 40-35 edge on the boards.

■ Grand Canyon 81, Seattle 47:

Jovan Blacksher Jr. had 15 points, six rebounds and five assists for the top-seeded Antelopes (166), who held the fifth-seeded Redhawks (12-11) to 28.3-percent shooting.

Gabe Mcglothan had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Chance Mcmillian 14 points for Grand Canyon, which held a 51-27 edge in rebounds.

Riley Grigsby scored 15 points and Darrion Trammell 12 for Seattle, which bolted to an 8-0 lead but held its last lead at 10-9 4:58 into the game. The Redhawks trailed 49-27 at halftime.

Big West

At Michelob Ultra Arena

■ UC Irvine 78, UC Riverside 61:

Dawson Baker and Collin Welp each scored 17 points for the second-seeded Anteaters (18-8), who never trailed the third-seeded Highlander­s (14-8) en route to their sixth straight win.

D.J. Davis added 14 points for UCI, which led 41-28 at halftime. It next plays top-seeded UC Santa Barbara (21-4) in the final at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Jock Perry and Arinze Chidom scored 16 points apiece, and Perry had 10 rebounds for UCR, which shot 34.4 percent and saw its four-game win streak end.

■ UC Santa Barbara 71, UC Davis 55:

Amadou Sow scored 23 points and Jaquori Mclaughlin 17 for the top-seeded Gauchos (21-4), who committed only seven turnovers and scored 18 points off 14 turnovers by the fourth-seeded Aggies (10-8).

Ajare Sanni had 16 points for UCSB, which led 33-21 at halftime in its fourth straight win. The Gauchos shot 42.6 percent, while UC Davis shot 41.5 percent.

Christian Anigwe scored 15 points and Elijah Pepper 13 for the Aggies.

WOMEN WAC

At Orleans Arena

■ Grand Canyon 57, Utah Valley 54:

Katie Scott scored 13ofher18p­ointsinthe fourth quarter to lead the third-seeded Antelopes (18-6) past the second-seeded Wolverines (13-6) in a semifinal.

Tiarra Brown put Grand Canyon ahead to stay with a 3-pointer 2:15 into the fourth quarter and totaled 15 points. The Antelopes next face top-seeded California Baptist (23-0) in the final at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Josie Williams had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Shay Fano 11 points and seven rebounds for Utah Valley, which held a 41-29 edge in rebounds but saw its six-game win streak end.

The score was tied at 12 after one quarter and at 36 after three quarters. Grand Canyon shot 37.1 percent and had no field goals over the final 3:26. The Wolverines shot 42.9 percent.

■ California Baptist 79, New Mexico State 54:

Caitlyn Harper had 17 points and eight rebounds for the top-seeded Lancers (230), who overcame a shaky first quarter to race past the fourth-seeded Aggies (9-12).

Taylor Wu scored 13 points for Cal Baptist, which missed 17 of 19 first-quarter shots and trailed 15-7 after the period. The Lancers rebounded to lead 30-27 at halftime and 52-39 entering the fourth quarter.

Soufia Inoussa scored 14 points and Aaliyah Prince 12 for NMSU, which shot 30.4 percent and saw its fourgame win streak end. The Lancers scored 20 points off 22 Aggies turnovers.

Big West

■ UC Irvine 68, Cal Poly 59:

Chloe Webb had 20 points and eight rebounds to help rally the second-seeded Anteaters (15-8) past the sixth-seeded Mustangs (1311) and into their first league final since 1997.

Victoria Baker and Sophia Locandro each scored 11 points for UC Irvine, which faces top-seeded UC Davis (12-2) in the final at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Abbey Ellis had 15 points and eight rebounds for Cal Poly, which led 16-7 after one quarter and 34-31 at halftime. The score was tied at 48 entering the fourth quarter.

Baker’s putback with 3:47 left put the Anteaters ahead to stay. They made 20 of 25 free throws, including 9 of 10 in the fourth quarter, to overcome 34.5-percent fieldgoal shooting.

■ UC Davis 64, Hawaii 52:

Mackenzie Trpcic had 13 points and Sage Stobbart 12 points and 11 rebounds for the top-seeded Aggies (122), who pulled away from a 24-all halftime tie to oust the fifth-seeded Rainbow Wahine (9-8).

UC Davis, which shot 44.9 percent and held Hawaii to 23.5 percent, held a 26-14 scoring edge in the paint and led 46-35 entering the fourth quarter. The Aggies held a 42-38 advantage in rebounds.

Amy Atwell had 17 points and nine rebounds and Jadynn Alexander 10 points for the Rainbow Wahine.
