■ Ex-president Donald Trump lashed out at the media after a correction to a January story.
Former President Donald Trump lashed out at the media after The Washington Post, The Associated Press and others ran a correction to a January story originally claiming Trump told Georgia’s top elections investigator she would be “a national hero” if she could “find the fraud” in the state’s 2020 voting.
“You will notice that establishment media errors, omissions, mistakes, and outright lies always slant one way — against me and against Republicans,” Trump said in a statement. “This latest media travesty underscores that legacy media outlets should be regarded as political entities — not journalistic enterprises.”
Georgia elections officials told The Atlanta Journal-constitution that their description of the call between Trump and Frances Watson, Georgia’s top elections investigator, wasn’t meant to be presented as a “word-for-word transcript.”
Deputy Secretary of State Jordan Fuchs said Tuesday that the office’s initial report about the conversation between Trump and Watson relied on Watson’s recollection.
A recording of the conversation, located on a trash folder in Watson’s email account during an open records request, was released last week. It revealed that Trump told Watson she would find “dishonesty” if she scrutinized absentee ballots in Fulton County and that she had the “most important job in the country right now.”
Earlier reporting by the AJC, The Washington Post and other news organizations misquoted the exact words that Trump used to urge Watson to act. The former president did not urge Watson to “find the fraud” and did not promise she would become a “national hero.”
Pennsylvania Rep. Madeleine Dean used the misquote during Trump’s impeachment trial. The impeachment trial brief also had the erroneous quote.
In his Tuesday statement, Trump again raised the specter of election fraud, calling for a probe into the voting.
“I would further appreciate a strong investigation into Fulton County, Georgia, and the Stacey Abrams political machine which, I believe, would totally change the course of the presidential election in Georgia,” Trump said.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is carrying out a criminal investigation into Trump’s attempts to overturn the results of the November presidential election, the Washington Examiner reported.
In addition, the Georgia secretary of state’s office is also conducting a probe.
