White Sox slugger Jimenez out with ruptured pectoral
Chicago White Sox left fielder Eloy Jimenez is expected to be sidelined five to six months after rupturing his left pectoral tendon trying to make a catch Wednesday, putting the 24-year-old’s season in jeopardy. Jimenez, who needs surgery to repair the injury, batted .276 with 45 home runs and 120 RBIS in 177 games over the past two seasons.
■ Obit: Bobby Brown, an infielder on five World Series champions with the New York Yankees from 1947 to 1954, who became a cardiologist and was American League president from 1984 to 1994, died Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas. He was 96.
■ Orioles: Right-hander Matt Harvey, in camp on a minor league contract, made the opening-day roster on a one-year, $1 million deal. Injuries and ineffectiveness have plagued the 31-year-old former Allstar over the past five years.
■ Padres: Right-hander Yu Darvish was named opening-day starter. The 34-yearold four-time All-star, acquired Dec. 29 from the Chicago Cubs, was 8-3 with a 2.01 ERA over 12 starts in 2020.
■ Rockies: Left-hander Kyle Freeland will be sidelined at least one month with a left shoulder strain. The 27-year-old had a 4.33 ERA in a team-high 13 starts in 2020.
■ Rangers: Designated hitter Khris Davis strained his left quadriceps running out a bunt single Tuesday and is expected to be sidelined three to four weeks.
■ Marlins: Left-hander Gio Gonzalez retired after 13 major league seasons with four teams. The 35-year-old two-time Allstar was 131-101 with a 3.70 ERA.
