Rodon no-hits Indians
CHICAGO — Carlos Rodon threw the majors’ second nohitter of the season Wednesday, losing his bid for a perfect game on a hit-batter in the ninth inning, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 8-0.
Working quickly in short sleeves on a 45-degree night, Rodon threw 75 of his 114 pitches for strikes. The No. 3 pick in the 2014 draft out of North Carolina State struck out seven in his first shutout and second complete game.
Rodon (2-0) was perfect before plunking Roberto Perez on his back foot with an 0-and-2 slider with one out in the ninth.
The closest call for a hit occurred when Josh Naylor led off the ninth with a slow bouncer wide of first. First baseman Jose Abreu picked it up and got his toe on the bag just ahead of a sliding Naylor. The call stood after video review.
Rodon regained his composure after the hit-batsman to strike out Yu Chang looking and retire Jordan Luplow on a sharp grounder to third, kicking off a joyous celebration.
The no-hitter was the first for the White Sox since Lucas Giolito on Aug. 25 last year against Pittsburgh and No. 20 in franchise history, second-most in the majors behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (23).
Sidelined by a string of arm injuries, Rodon was out of a job last winter. In December, the White Sox declined to offer him a 2021 contract. He re-signed as a free agent, agreeing to a oneyear, $3 million deal Feb. 1.
