Saints dominate Packers to kick off post-brees era

-

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jameis Winston and the hurricane-displaced New Orleans Saints looked right at home in northeast Florida.

Winston passed for five touchdowns, and the Saints intercepted reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers twice to begin the post-drew Brees era with a strikingly dominant 38-3 victory over the Green Bay Packers.

The game, originally scheduled for the Superdome, was moved while the

New Orleans area continues to clean up wreckage left by Hurricane Ida. After canceling their final preseason game and practicing two weeks in the Dallas area, the Saints looked as sharp and inspired as any club with such distractions could have hoped.

Winston was an efficient 14 of 20 for 148 yards without an interception. New Orleans rushed for 171 yards.

■ Rams 34, Bears 14: At Inglewood, Calif., Matthew Stafford passed for 321 yards and three touchdowns in a dynamic debut with his new team, as the Rams again looked like an offensive powerhouse under coach Sean Mcvay.

■ 49ers 41, Lions 33: At Detroit, the Niners barely held on for a victory after building a 38-10 lead early in the fourth quarter. In coach Dan Campbell’s debut, the Lions scored 23 points in three-plus minutes to pull within eight points. Detroit came up short, however, by turning the ball over on downs with 12 seconds left.

■ Eagles 32, Falcons 6: At Atlanta, Jalen Hurts threw three touchdown passes, the first of them to Heisman winner Devonta Smith, and Philadelphia made a winner of Nick Sirianni in his head coaching debut with a rout of the hapless Falcons.
