Scherzer nearly perfect, reaches 3,000 Ks in win
LOS ANGELES — Max Scherzer became the 19th major league pitcher to reach 3,000 strikeouts and took a perfect game into the eighth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat San Diego 8-0 Sunday to cap a three-game sweep.

Scherzer (14-4) retired the Padres’ first 22 batters before Eric Hosmer doubled to deep right with one out in the eighth. The crowd of 42,637 saluted Scherzer with a standing ovation after the inning.
The 37-year-old eight-time All-star reached 3,000 strikeouts in the fifth when Hosmer went down swinging. Scherzer struck out nine overall on 92 pitches. The three-time Cy Young Award winner threw an immaculate inning in the second with three strikeouts on nine pitches.
The Dodgers stayed 2½ games behind National League West-leading San Francisco. San Diego starter Blake Snell left after 11 pitches with a left adductor injury, so the Padres used seven pitchers. Corey Seager and Mookie Betts each hit a solo home run, and Justin Turner added a three-run blast.

■ Brewers 11, Indians 1: At Cleveland, Kolten Wong and Avisail Garcia each homered twice to back Eric Lauer (6-5), who took a no-hitter into the sixth.
