JOHN E THOMPSON

-

It is with great sorrow that I announce the passing of John E. Thompson after a diagnosis of Covid 19 on Oct 5th. John came home from the hospital on Oct 16th and passed away on Oct 17th. He was surrounded by his family as he made his final journey and received his real wings. His niece Nina flew in from Minnesota to help with his hospice care. John was born an only child in 1946 to Maxine and John Thompson of Minneapolis Minnesota. He graduated from high school in 1967 and joined the Navy shortly after. He served

on the USS Ranger an air craft carrier off the coast of Viet Nam. John had a variety of jobs after the Navy. He enjoyed driving semi for the US Post Office. While working at the post office John met a guitar player that encouraged him to sing and play the guitar. They started a band called Winterwood that changed his life. He was playing country and rock with Winterwood when he met his wife Dorie.

They were married in 1974. John went to Brown Institute of Broadcasting and tried radio for a short time. He missed singing so he played and sang with Gold Dust, Pecos and Sunrise. In 1979 John, Dorie, and son Jarrod moved to Las Vegas to check out the opportunities here. John met a drummer and the duo Thompson and Tolson was formed. They first started playing at Sam's Town then other night spots around the city. John attended Nevada Gaming institute and worked on slots while he occasionally played music. He changed jobs again and started working at Nevada Copy Systems and Ikon. He worked at Alternative Office Systems and retired in 2013 as shop manager. In 1983 John started playing music at Community Lutheran Church. In 1992 a country gospel group called the Honky Tonk Angels was formed. John played guitar, was the lead vocalist, and lead the group until his death. Johns voice was truly a gift from God . May he continue to sing in Heaven. John was a wonderful

Husband, Father, family member and friend to everyone. John and Dorie had just celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary.
