Arizona State women soar early, topple No. 6 Arizona

TEMPE, Ariz. — Jade Loville scored 27 points, Mael Gilles hit two big free throws and totaled 19 points, and the Arizona State women withstood a late rally to edge No. 6 Arizona 81-77 on Friday.

The Sun Devils (12-8, 4-3 Pac-12) dominated through three quarters, building a 14-point lead while keeping the Wildcats (17-4, 7-4) mostly in check.

Shaina Pellington scored 30 points and Cate Reese 18 for Arizona, which rallied behind its defense — holding Arizona State without a field goal for nearly five minutes.

The Sun Devils answered with an

8-0 run to go up 78-75 with 1:25 left. Pellington hit two free throws and scored in transition after an ASU turnover to cut the Wildcats’ deficit to one.

Arizona State missed two shots on the next possession, and Arizona got the ball to Pellington. But she was called for an offensive foul.

Gilles then hit two free throws, and Pellington missed a 3-point try with three seconds left. Loville sealed it by hitting 1 of 2 free throws. The Sun Devils made 31 of 34 free throws in a foul-filled game.

■ No. 2 Stanford 91, Utah 64: At Stanford, Calif., Lexie Hull and Haley Jones each had 15 points for the Cardinal (20-3, 11-0 Pac-12), who scored 22 points off 20 turnovers by the Utes (14-8, 5-5) in their 26th straight conference victory. Utah had won four in a row.

■ No. 8 Connecticu­t 84, Depaul 60: At Storrs, Conn., Dorka Juhasz scored 22 points and Christyn Williams 20 for the Huskies (16-5, 10-1 Big East), who held a 47-37 edge in rebounds. Aneesah Morrow had 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Blue Demons (19-7, 11-4), who were outscored 62-30 in the paint.

TOP 25 MEN

■ No. 25 Xavier 74, No. 24 Connecticu­t 68: At Cincinnati, Jack Nunge had 22 points and nine rebounds for the Musketeers (17-7, 7-6 Big East), who led by as many as 10 points in the second half and halted a two-game skid. R.J. Cole scored 22 points for the Huskies (16-7, 7-5).

MOUNTAIN WEST MEN

■ Colorado State 65, Fresno State

50: At Fort Collins, Colo., David Roddy had 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Rams (19-3, 9-3), who shot 52 percent and held the Bulldogs (168, 6-5) to 35 percent. Orlando Robinson scored 24 points for FSU, which led 28-25 at halftime.

■ UNR 85, Utah State 74: At Logan, Utah, Desmond Cambridge scored 27 points and Grant Sherfield 24 for the Wolf Pack (10-13, 4-8), who overcame a 37-32 halftime deficit and halted a six-game slide. Brandon Horvath had 29 points and eight rebounds for the Aggies (15-11, 6-7).

■ New Mexico 78, Northern New Mexico 46: At Albuquerqu­e, N.M., Jamal Mashburn Jr. scored 21 points for the Lobos (10-14), who held the Eagles (0-4) to 32 percent shooting.
