Moncada heads to IL; Anderson returns for Sox

-

The sputtering Chicago White Sox got Tim Anderson back on Monday night, returning the dynamic shortstop to the top of their lineup.

Anderson was activated from the 10day injured list after being sidelined by a strained right groin. Anderson, who turns 29 on Thursday, got hurt while making a play in the field during a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on May 29.

To make room for Anderson on the active roster, third baseman Yoán Moncada was placed on the 10-day IL with a strained right hamstring. Moncada left Friday night’s 13-3 loss at Houston in the third inning.

The White Sox have been hit hard by injuries this year. Moncada joins an IL list that also includes outfielder Eloy Jiménez, closer Liam Hendriks, catcher Yasmani Grandal and key reliever Aaron Bummer.

■ Mets: New York promoted first baseman/outfielder Dominic Smith from Triple-a Syracuse. The Mets called up Smith, 26, and put right-hander Seth Lugo on the paternity list. Also, Jeff Mcneil left the game against Miami on Monday with tightness in his right hamstring and was sent for an MRI.

■ Padres: All-star slugger Manny Machado wasn’t in the lineup a day after spraining his left ankle, and acting manager Ryan Flaherty was optimistic he won’t need to go on the injured list. “He’s got some purple and blue in there, but overall he’s moving around pretty good and feels good,” Flaherty said Monday.

■ Mariners: Relievers Sergio Romo and and Roenis Elías were cut by Seattle to make room for reliever Ken Giles and infielder Kevin Padlo.
