NBA Irving scores 24 in debut for Mavericks to fuel win

Kyrie Irving scored a team-high 24 points in his Dallas debut, and the Mavericks never trailed while beating the host Los Angeles Clippers 110-104. Irving, an eight-time All-star traded Sunday by Brooklyn, scored eight points in an early 13-0 run and added five assists in 37 minutes.

■ Celtics 106, 76ers 99: At Boston, Malcolm Brogdon and Derrick White each scored 19 points for Boston, which won for the fourth time in five games but lost guard Jaylen Brown (facial contusion).

■ Timberwolv­es 143, Jazz 118: At Salt Lake City, Anthony Edwards had 31 points and Jaylen Nowell 30 for Minnesota, which scored a season-high 79 first-half points and totaled 23 3-pointers.

■ Kings 130, Rockets 128: At Houston, De’aaron Fox hit three free throws with 0.3 seconds left and totaled 31 points and 11 assists for Sacramento. Jalen Green scored 41 points for Houston.

■ Trail Blazers 125, Warriors 122: At Portland, Ore., Damian Lillard had 33 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for Portland, which shot 55.1 percent and had a 47-32 edge in rebounds.

G League

■ Ignite 106, Spurs 99: At Cedar Park, Texas, Leonard Miller had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Ignite (11-23), who led 56-46 at halftime and 84-67 after three quarters in their second win in eight games. Dominick Barlow scored 26 points for Austin (10-25), which shot 37.5 percent in its fourth loss in five games.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL Vanderbilt shot at buzzer throttles No. 6 Tennessee

Tyrin Lawrence hit a 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer and totaled 19 points as host Vanderbilt beat No. 6 Tennessee 66-65. The Commodores (12-12, 5-6 SEC), who had lost 11 straight to the Volunteers (19-5, 8-2), trailed 34-32 at halftime in a game that had nine ties and 15 lead changes.

■ West Virginia 76, No. 11 Iowa State 71: At Morgantown, W.VA., Kedrian Johnson scored 22 points and Emmitt Mathews 20 for the Mountainee­rs (15-9, 4-7 Big 12), who dealt the Cyclones (16-7, 7-4) their fifth straight road loss.

■ No. 25 San Diego State 63, Utah State 61: At Logan, Utah, Matt Bradley scored 18 points for the Aztecs (19-5, 10-2 Mountain West), who led 44-28 at halftime. The Aggies (19-6, 8-4) had been 11-1 at home.

Women

■ Marquette 59, No. 4 Connecticu­t 52: At Milwaukee, Chloe Marotta scored 19 points for the Golden Eagles (16-8, 9-6 Big East), who beat the Huskies (21-4, 13-1) for the first time in 17 meetings and dealt them a second straight loss for the first time since 1993.

NHL Benn sparks rally by Stars in victory over Minnesota

Dallas captain Jamie Benn scored to break a scoreless tie 23 seconds into the host Stars’ three-goal second period as they beat Minnesota 4-1. Dallas’ second straight win ended a four-game run of games going past regulation in which the Stars went 1-0-3, with all decided by 3-2 scores.

■ Rangers 4, Canucks 3: At New York, defenseman K’andre Miller assisted on goals by Chris Kreider, Filip Chytil and Alexis Lafreniere for New York, which won its third straight and moved to 4-0-1 in its past five games.
