Brewers beat Scherzer, cap Texas sweep

ARLINGTON, Texas — Max Scherzer moved into 11th place on the majors’ career strikeout list just before an erratic stretch when he forced in two Milwaukee runs, and the National League Central-leading Brewers beat Texas 6-2 on Sunday to cap a three-game sweep.

No. 9 batter Tyrone Taylor had a two-run triple and scored three runs as Milwaukee kept its three-game division lead over the second-place Chicago Cubs.

New York Mets. He got his 3,343rd strikeout when rookie Brice Turang whiffed opening the third inning, the third of four strikeouts for the three-time Cy Young Award winner. Scherzer passed Hall of Fame knucklebal­ler Phil Niekro for 11th place.

That also was the start of 42-pitch inning for Scherzer, who issued four walks in 3⅔ innings. The Brewers scored their first run when Scherzer hit Willy Adames on the helmet with a fastball. Five pitches later, Scherzer walked Rowdy Tellez.

Two-out doubles by Taylor and Christian Yelich in the fourth made it 3-1 and chased Scherzer after 99 pitches. Milwaukee starter Adrian Houser (5-4) allowed one run while striking out seven over five innings.

■ Orioles 12, Athletics 1: At Oakland, Calif., Gunnar Henderson went 4-for-5 with a homer, a triple, two doubles and two RBIS to back Kyle Bradish (8-6), who allowed two hits and struck out eight in six shutout innings.

■ Red Sox 6, Yankees 5: At New York, Justin Turner a three-run homer in the seventh and a go-ahead RBI double in the ninth for Boston, which dealt New York an eighth straight loss for the first time since August 1995.

■ Twins 2, Pirates 0: At Minneapoli­s, Edouard Julien hit an RBI double and a sacrifice fly to back Dallas Keuchel (1-1), who took a perfect game into the seventh and ultimately allowed one hit in 6⅓ shutout innings.

■ Nationals 4, Phillies 3: At Williamspo­rt, Pa., Keibert Ruiz hit a two-run double in Washington’s four-run first to back Trevor Williams (6-7), who allowed two hits in six shutout innings.

■ Blue Jays 10, Reds 3: At Cincinnati, Brandon Belt hit two of the five homers off Hunter Greene (2-5), who yielded nine runs over three innings in his first start off the injured list.

■ Giants 4, Braves 3: At Atlanta, Luis Matos and Wilmer Flores homered for San Francisco, which went ahead to stay when Kirby Yates (7-1) issued a bases-loaded walk in the ninth.

■ Mariners 7, Astros 6: At Houston, rookie Dominic Canzone had four hits for Seattle, which built a 6-0 lead by the third and capped a threegame sweep with its sixth win in a row.

■ Tigers 4, Guardians 1: At Cleveland, Spencer Torkelson hit a two-run homer in the first to back Eduardo Rodriguez (9-6), who allowed one run in 6⅔ innings.

■ Cubs 4, Royals 3: At Chicago, Seiya Suzuki and Miguel Amaya homered for Chicago to back Kyle Hendricks (6-5), who allowed one run in 6⅓ innings.

■ Cardinals 7, Mets 3: At St. Louis, Paul Goldschmid­t went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and an RBI single for St. Louis.

■ White Sox 10, Rockies 5: At Denver, Lenyn Sosa capped Chicago’s seven-run eighth with a three-run homer.

■ Aces 7, Aviators 3: At Reno, Blaze

Anderson hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the second for Reno (68-52, 24-21 second half), which was outhit 8-7. Tyler Wade went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Aviators (61-58, 27-18).
