Kane helps Oilers roll past Flames in Heritage Classic

-

Evander Kane had a goal and two assists as host Edmonton beat rival Calgary 5-2 in the Heritage Classic outdoor game Sunday before a sellout crowd of 55,411 at Commonwealth Stadium.

Brett Kulak, Zach Hyman, Evan

Bouchard and Vincent Desharnais also scored for the Oilers, who snapped a fourgame skid (0-3-1). Stuart Skinner stopped 24 shots. A.J. Greer and Nazem Kadri each scored a power-play goal for the Flames in their fifth straight loss. Jacob Markstrom had 29 saves.

It was much warmer — 37 degrees at puck drop — than at the original Heritage Classic 20 years ago that reached minus-22 with the wind chill.

Reigning league MVP Connor Mcdavid had an assist after missing Edmonton’s two previous games because of an upperbody injury sustained Oct. 21.

The Oilers struck first when Kulak swept in a rebound 4:19 into the first period and went up 2-0 immediately after killing a two-man disadvantage when Hyman converted a 2-on-1 with Leon Draisaitl.

Calgary cut its deficit in half with 5:05 left in the first with one second left on another two-man advantage when Kadri’s high shot deflected off Skinner’s blocker and into the net for his first goal this season.

■ Sabres 4, Avalanche 0: At Buffalo, N.Y., Ukko-pekka Luukkonen stopped 24 shots in his first NHL shutout, and Jeff Skinner assisted on goals by J.J. Peterka and Casey Mittlestadt. Colorado capped a three-game trip with two straight shutout losses, ending an Nhl-record streak of 15 wins in a row on the road.

■ Capitals 3, Sharks 1: At Washington, Tom Wilson notched his 300th NHL point with a go-ahead goal with 4:45 left for Washington, which won its third straight — its longest win streak since December. Mackenzie Blackwood had 39 saves for San Jose (0-7-2), which has lost 15 straight dating to last season.

■ Devils 4, Wild 3: At Newark, N.J., Jesper Bratt scored twice and had an assist for New Jersey, which dealt Minnesota its third straight loss. Original Golden Knight Marc-andre Fleury stopped 26 shots for the Wild.
