Baseball team falls to Santa Clara, splits weekend nonconfere­nce set

Dylan Joyce hit a three-run homer and an RBI double to lift Santa Clara past UNLV 9-5 in a nonconfere­nce baseball game at Wilson Stadium. Efrain Manzo went 3-for-4 with a homer and a double for the Broncos (11-6), who had a 15-7 edge in hits and a 5-1 advantage in extra-base hits. Santino Panaro hit a two-run single for the Rebels (10-8), who halted a six-game skid by beating Santa Clara 5-0 late Saturday, when Austin Cates struck out 10 in six shutout innings for UNLV.

■ Softball: At Eller Media Stadium, the Rebels split a Mountain West-opening doublehead­er with Colorado State, losing 9-2 and winning 5-4. Maya Matsubara went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, a two-run single and a double in Game 1 as the Rams (18-9, 1-1) won their 11th straight game. Jesse Farrell hit a two-run double and an RBI single in Game 2 for UNLV (16-9, 1-1), which overcame Peyton Allen’s fifth-inning grand slam.

■ Women’s golf: At Tucson, Arizona, Toa Yokoyama closed the Mountainvi­ew Collegiate with a 4-underpar 68 for a 6-under 210 total to tie for fourth in an 81-player field, five strokes behind medalist Melanie Green of South Florida. The Rebels placed 11th in the 15-team field at 13-over 877, 29 shots behind champion South Florida.

■ Track and field: At Tucson, Ariz., Chinyere Okoro placed second in the 100-meter dash in 11.64 seconds, Jaydea Carter was fourth in the 100 hurdles (14.03), and they teamed with Kennedi Porter and Annakay Maitland to take third in the 400 relay (44.39) to lead the Rebels in the Arizona Spring Break Fiesta.

■ Women’s tennis: At Colorado Springs, Colo., Salsa Aher and Cindy Hu won in singles and doubles to help the Rebels (7-5, 1-1 Mountain West) notch a 4-1 victory over Air Force (1-9, 0-2).

■ Men’s tennis: At Fertitta Tennis Complex, Illia Maksymchuk won at No. 2 singles and doubles for the Rebels (6-7) in their 5-2 loss to Grand Canyon (4-11).
