Cabrera excels as Yanks surge late, top Astros

No. 9 batter Oswaldo Cabrera had a careerhigh four hits with three RBIS to lead the New York Yankees over host Houston 7-1 on Friday.

Cabrera’s big game came after he had two hits, including a solo homer in the opener Thursday.

Juan Soto had three hits and put the Yankees ahead when he drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.

Cristian Javier limited New York to four hits across six scoreless innings before they broke through in the seventh against three relievers.

Luke Weaver (1-0) pitched 1⅓ hitless innings in relief of Carlos Rodon, who held the Astros to one run on five hits and three walks in 4⅓ innings.

■ Brewers 3, Mets 1: At New York, Christian Yelich went 3-for-4 with a homer to back Freddy Peralta (1-0), who held New York to one run on one hit while striking out eight over six innings. Starling Marte’s homer in the second was the Mets’ lone hit. Touted Milwaukee prospect Jackson Chourio had a single, an RBI, a steal and a key leaping catch at the wall in right in his major league debut.

■ Braves 9, Phillies 3: At Philadelph­ia,

Matt Olson doubled three times, including a bases-loaded drive in Atlanta’s seven-run eighth. Michael Harris II’S three hits included a tiebreakin­g RBI single in the eighth off reliever Jose Alvarado (0-1), who was charged with five runs.

■ Guardians 6, Athletics 4: At Oakland,

Calif., Jose Ramirez hit a two-run homer in Cleveland’s three-run first, and Andres Gimenez went 3-for-3 with two RBI doubles for the Guardians. J.D. Davis hit two solo homers for Oakland. A crowd of 3,837 was announced.

■ Mariners 1, Red Sox 0: At Seattle, J.P. Crawford homered in the sixth to back George Kirby (1-0), who allowed two hits while striking out eight in 6⅔ shutout innings. Nick Pivetta (01) yielded one run on three hits over six innings while striking out 10.

■ Rays 8, Blue Jays 2: At St. Petersburg,

Fla., Brandon Lowe hit a go-ahead grand slam to back Aaron Civale (1-0), who allowed one run in six innings. Tampa Bay improved to 12-3 when wearing Devil Rays throwback uniforms.

■ Pirates 7, Marlins 2: At Miami, Ke’bryan Hayes had a single and an RBI double for Pittsburgh, which spoiled A.J. Puk’s first major league start. The former Aviator yielded four runs on three hits and six walks over two innings.

■ Giants 8, Padres 3: At San Diego, Matt Chapman homered twice, doubled and drove in five runs to back Kyle Harrison (1-0), who allowed two runs in six innings. Fernando Tatis Jr. homered twice for San Diego.

■ Diamondbac­ks 7, Rockies 3: At Phoenix, Alek Thomas hit a three-run homer for Arizona to back Merrill Kelly (1-0), who allowed one run on three hits while striking out eight over 6⅔ innings.

■ Aces 4, Aviators 2: At Las Vegas Ballpark, Kyle Garlick homered and hit an RBI double to back Slade Cecconi, who shut out the Aviators on no hits and two walks over five innings in both teams’ season opener. Reno held a 12-3 edge in hits, and both Aviators runs were unearned.
