Cory hits 400-victory benchmark as women’s tennis team coasts to win

Kevin Cory became the 46th NCAA women’s tennis coach to reach 400 wins when UNLV blanked host Boise State 4-0 in a Mountain West match. Zita Kovacs, Cindy Hu and Coco Zhao won in singles and doubles for the Rebels (12-6, 5-2). The lone victory for the Broncos (7-10, 3-4) came at No. 3 doubles. Cory, who is retiring at the end of the season after 25 years guiding the program, has led UNLV to a 400-185 mark in dual matches, including 130-37 in league play. He is the 33rd coach to reach 400 victories at one school.

■ Baseball: At Wilson Stadium, Kade Higgins followed J.P. Hefft’s leadoff walk in the bottom of the 10th inning with a walk-off RBI double, lifting the

Rebels past Air Force 6-5 in a Mountain West game. Jay Thomason hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth for the Falcons (12-18, 8-6) that pinch hitter Brendan O’sullivan answered in the bottom of the inning. Parker Schmidt hit two RBI singles for UNLV (15-15, 5-10), which won two of three games in the series.

■ Softball: At Eller Media Stadium, Ariana Martinez singled and hit a three-run homer in the Rebels’ 11-first inning and had an RBI single in their five-run second in a 16-7 nonconfere­nce win over North Dakota State. Skyler Shaw hit an RBI triple, stole two bases and scored three runs for UNLV (24-12). The Bison (16-25) were outhit 14-10.

■ Track and field: At Partridge Stadium, Kennedi Porter won the 100-meter dash in 11.36 seconds, Jaydea Carter won the 100 hurdles in 13.66 seconds, and both were part of the 400 relay team that won in 45.60 seconds at the Rebels Elite Meet.

■ Men’s tennis: At Fertitta Tennis Complex, Illia Maksymchuk and Taiyo Hirano won in singles and teamed for a doubles victory to lead the Rebels (8-7, 1-0 Mountain West) to a 5-2 triumph over Air Force (6-11, 1-3).
