Calipari reportedly finalizing deal to leave Kentucky to coach at Arkansas

-

Kentucky men’s basketball coach John Calipari is finalizing a five-year deal to be Arkansas’ coach, ESPN reported. The 65-year-old Hall of Famer is 410-123 in 15 seasons with the Wildcats after going 214-68 in nine years at Memphis. Kentucky hasn’t made it past the NCAA Tournament’s first weekend since 2019. Kentucky would owe Calipari more than $33 million if it were to fire him, but the school isn’t owed any money if another program hires him away from Lexington.

■ Women’s basketball: Tennessee hired Kim Caldwell as the fourth head coach in program history with a five-year, $3.75 million deal. The Parkersburg, West Virginia, native went 26-7 in her lone season at Marshall in 2023-24, leading the Thundering Herd to their second NCAA Tournament berth and first since 1997. She previously went 191-24 with a national title in seven seasons at Glenville State, an NCAA Division II program.

■ Women’s tennis: At Charleston, S.C., 22nd-ranked Danielle Collins notched her second straight WTA title by beating No. 11 Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-1 in the Charleston Open final. The 30-year-old became the first player since Serena Williams in 2013 to win Miami and Charleston in consecutive weeks.

■ Men’s tennis: At Houston, Ben Shelton won his second ATP title, outlasting defending champion Frances Tiafoe 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship final. The 21-year-old had 11 aces en route to becoming the event’s youngest winner since Andy Roddick did it at 19 in 2002.
