Butler did it: A’s trim Nats in 10 innings

Lawrence Butler hit a walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning and a home run in the third to power host Oakland past Washington 2-1 on Friday.

Max Schuemann scored the winning run in his major league debut after entering as the automatic runner on second base to begin the 10th. The 26-year-old utilityman was called up Thursday from the Aviators to replace injured outfielder Brent Rooker.

Butler hit a solo shot 445 feet to right with a 113.1 mph exit velocity, his first home run this season. The Nationals tied it in the ninth with a solo shot by Jesse Winker off Dany Jimenez.

Paul Blackburn made his third straight scoreless start to begin the season for the Athletics, striking out four in 6⅓ innings. His 20⅓ scoreless innings to begin a season are an Oakland record.

Nationals right-hander Jake Irvin tossed six innings of one-run ball. Washington first baseman Joey Gallo, a Bishop Gorman product, was ejected in the eighth after he and Lane Johnson were called out on strikes by umpire John Libka.

■ Tigers 8, Twins 2: At Detroit, Mark Canha, Spencer Torkelson and Matt Vierling each had two hits and two RBIS to back Tarik Skubal (2-0), who pitched five shutout innings.

■ Mariners 4, Cubs 2: At Seattle, Julio Rodriguez hit a two-out, two-run single in the Seattle fourth to back Bryce Miller (2-1), who allowed one unearned run in 6⅓ innings.

■ Mets 6, Royals 1: At New York, Brett Baty hit a two-run double, and New York scored five two-out runs and halted Kansas City’s seven-game win streak.

■ Rockies 12, Blue Jays 4: At Toronto, Ryan Mcmahon had three doubles and a single for Colorado, which totaled 20 hits while improving to 1-9 in Canada.

■ Angels 7, Red Sox 0: At Boston, Taylor Ward hit a two-run homer and an RBI groundout to back Reid Detmers (3-0), who pitched 6⅓ shutout innings.

■ Braves 8, Marlins 1: At Miami, Marcell

Ozuna went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIS to back Max Fried (1-0), who allowed one run in 6⅓ innings.

■ Cardinals 9, Diamondbac­ks 6: At Phoenix, Nolan Arenado hit a three-run homer for St. Louis, which rebounded after blowing a six-run lead.

■ Reds 11, White Sox 1: At Chicago, Elly De La Cruz hit a three-run homer to back Andrew Abbott (1-1), who allowed one run in seven innings.

■ Rays 2, Giants 1: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Jacob Waguespack held San Francisco to one run over four innings in his first start since 2019.

■ Pirates 5, Phillies 2: At Philadelph­ia, Bailey Falter (1-0) allowed one run over five innings to beat his former team.

■ Yankees at Guardians, ppd., rain: The game was reschedule­d as part of a split doublehead­er Saturday.

■ Aviators 4, Bees 3: At Las Vegas Ballpark, Hoy Park hit a two-run double in the third and Esteury Ruiz a two-run single in the fourth for the Aviators (3-9), who halted a three-game skid. Salt Lake (6-7) was held hitless by four relievers over the final five innings.
