UNLV men in eighth place after opening round of NCAA regionals
UNLV opened with a 1-over 281 to sit in eighth place after the first round of the NCAA men’s golf regional at Stanford. That leaves the Rebels 10 shots out of fifth place, the target to move on to the NCAA championship later this month. Illinois is setting the pace at 17 under, with Illini freshman Max Herendeen atop the individual leaderboard after a 7-under n63. Junior Trevor Lewis (68) is the top Rebel in a tie for 19th.
■ Golf: Jimmy Dunne, one of the key architects behind the PGA Tour’s stunning deal with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf, has abruptly resigned from the PGA Tour board. Dunne says he’s not been involved in any dealings with the Public Investment Fund since June. He says his vote is superfluous, and says playerheavy involvement and no substantial progress led to his decisioin.
■ NHL: Vancouver Canucks defenseman Carson Soucy has been suspended one game for a cross-check on Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor Mcdavid.
■ Tennis: Top-ranked Iga Swiatek remains on course for a Madrid-rome double after beating Angelique Kerber to reach the Italian Open quarterfinals.
■ Soccer: American Jesse Marsch has been hired as coach of Canada’s men’s national soccer team and signed to a contract through the 2026 World Cup.
The 50-year-old takes over Canada ahead of the Copa América, where Canada plays defending champion Argentina in the tournament opener on June 20.
